Three sailors on leave go into a motel for a room. The desk clerk tells them it will be $10.00 a piece for a total of $30.00 After a while the clerk thinks that since they are in the military he should give them a break, so he calls over the bellboy and gives him 5 one dollar bills, tells him to go upstairs and refund the sailors. On the way up he decides since there are three sailors and he has 5 one dollar bills that he should pocket 2 of them. So he gives each sailor a one dollar bill, which makes them paying only $9.00 each. 9 x 3 = 27 plus the two dollars in the bellboys pocket equals 29, where is the other dollar?

Of the original $30, the sailors now have $3, the bellboy $2, and the clerk $25. It's not $9x3 + $2, the bellboy didn't add his own money. He took $2 away from the $27, so the clerk has $25.
