BB Mopar Head ID
I recently acquired some BB Mopar parts and among them is a pair of heads I’m having a hard time identifying. The heads have the direct connection emblem cast into them and a casting number of 3714476. They came with valve covers that have “Mopar Stage IV” on them. These are a little bit out of my realm so any help to ID is appreciated

Re: BB Mopar Head ID
3614476 – MOPAR Stage IV, B/RB-series big-block, 2.08/1.74 valves, legal MW replacement for the 1964 (and maybe other) MW heads in NHRA.
4532287 SS only – MOPAR Stage V, B/RB-series big-block, 2.08/1.74 valves, 906 type replacement head.

Re: BB Mopar Head ID
The Stage IV was an over the counter replacement head Direct Connection sold in the late 1970-s, through the early 80's. They are standard port window, not Max Wedge port window, and they require a special offset intake rocker (more than stock, but not as much as Max Wedge). I believe the offset is .100 more than stock. They are slightly better than a "452" casting, but not as good as a Max Wedge head out of the box.

Re: BB Mopar Head ID
I had a set of stage IV heads back then. If I remember correctly, they require some push rod clearanecing on the outside of some of the intake ports. I think one of the old Direct Connection bulletins had instructions on what was required.

Re: BB Mopar Head ID
If my memory is correct the Stage IV heads weren't worth a damn out of the box and required a lot of work, and even so were not as good as a 518 head.
I'm sure Don Little's expert opinion would be worth much more than mine. Also Al Corda could offer his as well. Last edited by Frank Castros; 07-28-2021 at 07:08 PM. |

Re: BB Mopar Head ID
Max wedge heads absolutely require an offset rocker if you are running an aftermarket rocker like a T&D or Jesel. The OE rockers have an angled tip and don't require it. The aluminum rockers do not. For that matter an ordinary RB/440 head also requires an offset exhaust rocker.
