Auto trans fluid on a rag. Clean until it doesn't show any trace. If its rust you need to hone.

no rust...just stains from the cleaners...dull, not a shinny surface.

Ask yourself, why would I take a chance with ring seal? A light hone to “clean” the finish is what I recommend.

I have the same issue with a block I had to the machine shop, sat around in my garage for too many years. Now I have a little time, pulled it off the shelf and the WD-40 I sprayed on it to keep it from rusting dried on the cylinder walls. Recleaned it, and didn't like the look of the cylinders.Started checking clearences, and the piston to cylinder wall measurement isn't to my specs. So I am going so send it out to get rehoned again.

The over the counter WD-40 is a water dispersant and was not designed for long term corrosion protection.

However, in the WD-40 product line, they do have a WD-40 industrial product by the name of WD-40 Specialists Rust Inhibitor Lubricant that is for long term corrosion protection.

Another great corrosion inhibitor is Hornaday One-Shot lubricant. Although it was designed for guns, it is a great long term corrosion protectant for metals.

Watch, watch, watch: WD 40 is the worst thing for rust prevention. I bought a block that was stored for five years; was told it was sprayed once a year. Machinist gave it back to me & said .030 over will not clean it up; looking for another block. Lost a crank that same way. Grease it up boys; lasts forever!
