I have been lurking for the past 3 months and enjoyed reading the posts. Been a stock and super stock enthusiast since my first US Nationals in 1969. Never had the money to participate until now, and considering a 1971 Chevelle wagon 402. Give me an honest opinion on the combination. I have seen your opinions on other combinations and the reasoning has been top notch. So let it fly.

With the combining of the fuel injection cars and the conventional stockers next year it will make most of the older carburated combinations obsolete if you are planning to compete for a class trophy. If you are thinking about a superstock car te thought is NHRA might combine SS and GT this will also maqke the muscle cars obsolete. If you are starting from scratch you would be better off with a newer type car in both classes. Mike

do you plan on running it IHRA or NHRA? also is it the white car in Texas (i think that's where it's @ now)?

NHRA and a little IHRA, division 3 LODRS as well as the two Michigan IHRA national events. After that we will have to see how our grades go for the NHRA national events. Just will try to stay close to home.

I ran a 300/315 HP 402 in a '71 Chevelle coupe from 2001 to 2005. Now that I no longer run the combo, I will admit that is factored just about right- doesn't need an increase or a much of a decrease.
Cal Method had the same engine in a Camaro body in F and G, and often ran 1.20+ under the index. Mine was 1.00+ under about a dozen times, more often .75-.95 during the regular racing season, when the engine was fresh. It did not have all of the tricks that are common among top-half qualifiers, so I always believed there was another 2 tenths or so to be had. There are at least two other members of this forum that ran this engine, one with a Monte Carlo body, another a Nova. I think they had decent results too. Also, there was a white station wagon that set the F Pure Stock record at either Pittsburgh or Quaker City a couple years ago that seemed to work well. I say go for it.

I think the white Chevelle Wagon set the F pure Stock record in Illinois somewhere. not sure if he still holds the record.
I think someone made a comment that that car ran K/SA and couldn't get it to work, does anyone know why? |

the wagon set the F/PS records @ Kanahawa Valley 1/8th & Quaker-City 1/4 mile. That would have been back in 04 . I know because I set record @ Kanahawa Valley too & got to come apart right beside him. The car would run under the K/SA index 12.50 12.60 something like that......

You are right. My brother and I (Detroit Bob is my brother) figured the car would be a natural K/SA car. I don't know where I read or heard it but, someone made the comment that he tried to run the car in NHRA as a K/SA and struggled. Couldn't run the numbers to make it competitive. It seems you know of the car, have you heard anything of this statement?
We are just trying to avoid buying a car that won't be competetive in either K/SA or L/SA. We talked to Adger Smith about the combo and he really didn't comment on the combination one way or the other. So, we are asking a lot of opinions. |
