Default 71 Ford 302

71 302 2v, still rated at 162 HP. How much different is this from the later 302? Same 1.08 carb?

2.7 cc difference in the piston dish. Only difference other that casting #s.
IMHO, NHRAs 2013 f**kup of the year!
But on the bright side, it looks like a bunch of "Dime Rockets" are going to get built and I'm good with that!
Maybe the 2014 f**kup of the year will be 2V 318s or 2V 305s or even 304s!

It'll have to be the 318 2bbl as chev already got their gift.

86 350 4bbl at 165hp (been refactored to 189)
302 1.78/1.46 valves and single spring and 2bbl was at 162hp at the time.
350 1.94/1.50 valves and spring with damper and 4bbl is 165 and didn't start the threads the 302 did.

I certainly wouldn't complain if the 318 2bbl did get a reduction, but there are plenty of mopars out there now. Maybe it would spur even more to get out there, who knows?
Rather see 220hp or so for a 440 in an imperial only? LOL! BARGES UNITE! lol!

It's -32 with the windchill here...not even going to the garage today....

I'm not (really) complaining BUT, the 350 was/is a new (to the guide) combo and it involved 1 year, 1 bodystyle and 1 specific engine combo.
The 302 was/is an old, existing combo that was factored over 40 years ago and has on numerous occasions over the years been DE-factored to a point where if it was properly built, was very competitive. Gary Summers more than proved that. It also involves 11 model years in every bodystyle and in more different horsepower combinations that I care to count.
3 trucks, to my knowledge have been built and it has been RE-factored a number of times already. There are a number of different 302s being built and I won't live long enough for them all to be RE-factored. Example, Mr. Summers car was #1 Qual. at Indy at 1.6+ under and was RE-factored BUT only the 78 Mustang W/stick got hit. Put the drivetrain in a Fairmont and it's back at 139 HP again.
I'd love to see all of the old 2V combos looked at and DE-factored the way that the 302s were. The Stocker pits would be full of "Dime Rockets".

I get the impression NHRA took a lot of flack over the 302 thing. They turned down a few combos that deserved a reduction after that, including mine. I'm no longer competitive in U but the good thing is I can go hide in V.

Jim, the man responsible for that mistake would have been fired if he had worked anywhere else.

I'll agree with that! That would be cool.
