Dana Gear/spool series question
I removed this gear set out of my car last year. The only numbers are 80-6323-1/80-9323-1 and I cant find anything on them . Its a 5.57 precision gear. I was wondering if there was a way to tell whcih series spool that I have so I can order gears without taking the rearend out and apart? It currently has 4.88s and I want to go to 4.30s. Thanks

Re: Dana Gear/spool series question
BM,,,, I've been pondering the same swap as you, since my Dana 60 has 4:88s, and I'm told if I want to go with 4:30s, I'll have to change spools,, but if I only go with 4:56s I'll be okay. I'm thinking I won't get enough rpm drop, however, so I'm doing a little more research, still. I don't know how to tell you the difference on the spool series, but most likely there is a thickness difference between the 2. I'm sure someone will let us know.
Please post any info you find,, thanks. Danny Durham |

If I remember right 3:54-4:10 uses one spool and 4:56-7:17 uses the other not sure just where a 4:30 would fit in tho---FED387

Re: Dana Gear/spool series question
The 4.30 street gears go to the 3 series carrier, which is 4.10 and numerically lower ratios.
I have a customer who used to switch back and forth from 4.30's to 4.56's. We machined the bearing shoulder on a 4 series spool and made a thick shim so we can use only one spool for both ratios. Now Strange has a 4.30 Pro gear that fits the same spool as a 4.56
