i need a race flywheel for a different engine. my friend has a really good 40 lb Hays, for $90.00 since new 'wheels are so expensive........
what do you think about chucking the 40 lb'er in the lathe and cutting off 10 lbs? i have a 30 lb Hays, and it appears to me that the 40 is just extra thick toward the friction face side. your thoughts please. thanks rod in AZ |

I used to have 40 pounders machined down to about 28 lbs they were cut from starting at about the dia of the crank and maching toward the outside leaving about a 1 1/2 at the od they act like a heaver wheel Hays called the scollped flywheels.

Yep , can be done.. Some on the crank side as mentioned ,and some across the face.
It's hard to get a good surface on a lathe though. It'll chatter and vibrate. One problem is it's moving faster when you get towards the outside edge. Finish it up with a flywheel surface grinder.

check ebay. If you will accept off-shore steel (and after all no steel is still made here anyway), you should be able to find a cheap new wheel in the 30 lb. range.
