A friend has a '74 Javelin with the 360 and factory T-10. I guess AMC had trouble with the trans front brg retainer breaking in the early '70's and released a beefier version with a 1.400" snout diameter?
He wants to run this retainer...but now is having trouble finding a suitable t/o brg...at least at the parts store level. Needs a certain height for a perf. diaphragm clutch..that's not the question here. There are some possibilities...I checked the popular perf. clutch mfgrs online. Need to know...WHAT is the desired clearance between the snout's od...and the bore size of the bearing....for a street-driven vehicle? Is .025-.035 too much? Saw several 1.414" bearings in the BCA catalog...but the "other" dimensions weren't good for what he needs...This size too tight for street anyway? Anybody had a similar experience with an AMC.....Jeff?? Tom?? |

The '71 and later AMC T-10 shared many diminsions with the Super T-10 2nd design.
There were also two different stand heights for the release arm pivit, which will remedy most problems with finger or diaphragm height , and arm angle. The bearing you found will likely work if you change the pivit height. Aftermarket and even stock rebuild clutches usually wont work with the stock height bearing or pivit. McCleod has several different bearings that can be varied in height and will fit the T-10. I may remember some P/N if I think on it long enough, it's been 20 or more years since I had a 4-speed AMC.

I'm at my desk and so happens I have a TO bearing on it. I don't have my calipers out. All I can tell you is it is what I've run in the past and is NAPA p/n 1625-12. Hope this helps.

I would contact Centerforce clutches they seem to have 3-4 different part numbers for AMC bearings may be able to answer your ??? the number Jeff has is no longer sold by NAPA they have a different number now---I know that there were at least 3 pivot balls for an AMC (I went thru that many years ago)--5/8==3/4===1 1/6 in---- If memory serves me 440-426 Chrysler brgs will work--- ya just have to get the right geometry with the fork/pivot/brg and the clutch pedal rod

Thanks guys for all your help. Yes, the clutch is a Centerforce, and he's trying to evaluate info from them. Tom, thanks for the tips, I thought your Stocker was a stick!
Jeff, think he ran the 1625-12 brg. before...thought he brought an old one in with him...but wanted to go shorter this time...around 1.625" height? FED...I "hit" all the online catalogs...some I couldn't get into...like Zoom. Saw that adjustable brg. from McLeod...might be the way to go...but it will be his call...FORGOT that the pivot ball height comes into play as well... I saw that 1.414" bore id. dimension in an old BCA catalog...but I'm going to assume that a clearance of about .030" is ok between the brg. id and the trans snout's od, right? He's also getting input from an AMC club...of which he is a member...I'm sure this will be wrapped-up soon! |
