Best available cast/aluminum GM small block intake

I was ask this question at work today...... This young guy is building a pulling truck (1972) and it has to be "stock appearing" to meet class requirements. He is going to put a 434 short block in it as they do not pump them . We will set him up with a 800 cfm quadrajet, but I know nothing about stock intakes. Any suggestions?

Probably the old 70 LT-1 intake. A few years ago, Chevy also had a BowTie aluminum dual plane intake, and a marine cast iron version that accepted a Q-Jet with no adapter, it was released for circle track classes that required a cast iron intake that accepted a Q-Jet without an adapter.

Just a note, 70 LT-1 was a holley and your going to pay $$ when you find one.

I have a cast iron marine with the chevy casting numbers. Looks like a performer RPM. $200 Yes it's fast!

I'm well aware of all of that. The OP was fairly vague, they just said stock aluminum intake, nothing about cost or the need for an adapter.

Daran, If this is the cast one Alan is talking about, send me your phone # and Ill have him call you. I warned him that you stocker guys have good stuff, but its hard to get, and he might have to pay more than he thinks for it.

I know he is going to ask, so how much " better" is the Aluminum Lt-1 style verses the cast ones. And what do they go for ? Jeff

We never tried the iron intake on any "big" engines, but it ran really well on the 350-400 flat tappet iron head engines, well enough that most of the circle tracks outlawed it. That intake was very similar to the old Chevy dual plane high rise intakes, but it was a much later design.

As far as comparing the intakes, I'd guess you'll be hard pressed to find any serious data, as anyone using a stock intake had to use it, and anyone with a choice usually went straight to the speed shop and bought an Edelbrock or a Weiand, and sold the stock intake.

If the kid wants to really pony up, he can always grab a good casting and send it to Brezenski, they specialize in the cheated up stock appearing stuff.

As far as the market value of an LT-1 intake, just grab the casting number out of the blueprint guide and plug it into your favorite search engine. SOME of the stock stuff has dropped recently, by a considerable amount.

Some of the best cast GM intakes you can find are the 10051103 and the 10051102 .As far as actually using one would depend on if stock appearing meant that it has to look stock or if it is just required to be a part that is actually made by GM and is available through the GMPP catalog which both of these are.
