Question What air cleaner base is NHRA Legal?

Michael is racing my car in Chicago this weekend.
The air cleaner in question is a nice aluminum base cirlce track one.
I know alot of racers use this.
After 1st run was told to take it off,WTF been using it for 4 yrs.
Ive seen more aggresive lookng ones than mine.
Beware

The way I read it is OE for combo. They have been letting this slide for a long time. I was wondering when someone would complain. You know that is what happened. I also have been using the same one you use.

We've been told that an OEM or OEM-style air cleaner can be used, which means a K&N base is OK, but not the stub-stack. I'll venture a guess that a custom molded base doesn't fit some folks interpretation of what an "OEM" air cleaner should look like. There are a number of threads on air cleaners in the tech section that explain it much better than I can.

James,
At least 10 racers had them on at Indy in 2005. Bruce told me mine was fine and that he had no problem with it. I ran that same base for 3 more years and went through tear down at Indy in 2008 with the very same crew that is now trying to outlaw its use. This isn't a tech issue. It is a nhra issue. Glad I'm out of this mess.

James, I think that tech guy that's bitchin' about your air filter base out in Chicago is a friend of Drooze's....You know, maybe it's payback time from you cranking on him and his efforts all the time.....ROFLMAO..... Just kidding, James....hope he does well w/your car out there....WJ

Red face Re: What air cleaner base is NHRA Legal?

Tech was looking for air cleaner baseplates and stock seats at Brainerd last week. I guess this is an effort to move the class back to "stock", whatever that is.

Cool Re: What air cleaner base is NHRA Legal?

If it was not a crazy 16" air cleaner base or as what was said a custom made carbon fiber I don't see what is wrong with it? Just my worthless $.02. I (NHRA) would be more concerned about the underated cars that are not being looked at vs this.
