Default Torque Converters explained...maybe?

http://www.ultimateconverter.com/article.html

Hi guys, above is a link to a PDF that we put up on our website. It hopefully explains torque converter function and the reason to have a custom built unit in your race car. Check it out and let us know what you think. Just an informative piece, hope it sheds some knowledge on the how's and why's.

Thanks, Lenny@UCC

Thumbs up Re: Torque Converters explained...maybe?

Very good explanation and info! I along with Mark Yacavone were in the mix when Mike Sennia started YANK Converters. It was quite an experience for someone who knew nothing about converters. Jim

Thanks for the input Jim. I hope everybody that reads it gets a little insight on a little known but very important part of their combo and performance. Yank has been around for a while and it must have been neat seeing it happen from the beginning. Mark Y. has been around a while also, not inferring anything Mark lol, and has a lot of experience in this area also.

You need to add to the sprag/spragless that in most cases you will lose ET/MPH in the 1/4 with a spragless converter. When the turbine approaches close to the pump speed, the stator wants to unlock and can't. Reliability and consistency, spragless. Maximum performance in most cases, sprag or MD.

On the MD note,I am curious. Have you used any of the newer double element diodes and what reliability have you seen if so?

Hi, You are absolutely correct about the ET and MPH loss. The spragless will definately give it up in the quarter and build more heat. It is also a no-no for any type of street driving because of the heat build up. I will try to get my web guy to update if I can.

I have used some of the 10 element (paddle)diodes in some applications where I saw some abnormal wear on the 5 element(paddle) but these are in some pretty hi HP and Torque applications. Overall I have had pretty good luck with both types and have not experienced any catastrophic failure as of yet. (knock on wood). Thanks for your input.

Thanks for the info. I have a SS converter behind a SBC and now putting 250 of N2O on it and I already knew what was going to happen (increased starting line stall 900 rpm's) and is a 8 inch. So now I have a little more knowledge and will look into a 10 instead of trying to tighten the 8 inch to make work.
