sherman lifter help

i have a set of sherman lifters in my 92 mustang 5.0 l/sa. i can't get these things to work. the instructions say to set them with .002-.005 lash.i set them at .005. after 3-8 passes they start to tighten up and hold the valve open. is this the way they are and need to be adjusted after every pass? help!!!

Not @ all! I have a set in the 6cyl in dads car they were set in 06 & haven't been touched! we set them with a filler's guage @ .002 cold just like you would a solid? that's a hyd roller you have so not sure but should be the same? you have a good set of poly-locks?

brand new. new springs the works. they did the same thing last year with stock rockers and fulcrums that i shimmed for clearance. the new heads are stud and polylocks with early ford rockers. wonder what is wrong?

I suspect you're not were you think you are on the cam lobe when adjusting valves. Stocker cams are REAL touchy. Bumping the engine with the atarter is a good way to screw up valve lash adjustment. I would suggest EOIC while rotating the engine with a wrench.

I'll 2nd that...stocker cams are "funny" we "rock" the cam a couple time to make sure it's on the base circle.

Heres also what I feel is screwing things up. I had similar issues like this one.I feel the lifter is bled down when you are adjusting the lash! It will tighten your lash when the lifters fill back up from oil.(ex engine runs for a minute). I would loosen things up, start the engine do one side at a time (quickly as to not let the oil bleed out) then do the other side. Now if this does not work I can tell you the lifters are junk. Trust me as im not going to get into the full details but I have taken these lifters apart and was very suprised at all that makes them work or not work. Also call Allen and tell him the status and they can guide you more. Hope this helps Mike

check the lifter for the plunger to be topped out at the plunger retainer,with no push rod on it,(mite be missing the spring) gmonde
also if you not on the bottom of the cam when adjusting lash you would end up with a loose rocker,,,,,,,

Have you checked for clearance between the rocker, and the spring? I run the Shermans with stock rockers, and have had no issues?

Bob, these lifters are a little more tricky to adjust. You may have to set them after your 1st couple of runs. They do "seat" in and stay adjusted very well. I'm very pleased with my set and Cliff's "after the sale service" is second to none!
