Default What class to start?

I have three cars, need to cut back to two. My son and I will be running a few divisionals this year, trying to figure what classes would be best for us to jump into.

My 90 Mustang could run either S/ST, or S/G. His Ranger could run S/ST, S/G, or if we push it S/C. or I have a nice Altered we just finished for S/C. We can only transport two cars, because there are only two of us driving tow vehicles and I can not fir two cars in my 30' box.

Where would the best place for us to start out be?

I was thinking of running S/ST with the Mustang, and letting him run S/G with the truck. What do you guys think of throwing a 18yo with limited experience to the S/G crowd?

Freddie.....I don't think its an issue sending the kid in super gas....if he's comfortable with the speed...if he's just learning to go that fast then I'd go in super street...to get comfortable.....

I would run them both in the classes where I would have the higher MPHs. Better to run s/g with a higher mph than run s/c on the slow side.

Damn I hope I didnt rekindel an old post!

Thanks, so far he has been comfortable running the mustang in the 140 range, he has no seat time in the truck because its not finished yet. I dont think it will be much of a stretch for him to run in the 150's in the truck, it will be longer, and with bigger tires.

I dont think I can put the truck in S/ST easily, it only weighs 2400#

let the kid run S/ST as it is the "ENTRY LEVEL" class (still not an easy class) however there will be some others that are just starting out too so he may get to go some rounds and have fun!

I like Chris's advice. From a driver development perspective, he will have plenty to deal with in S/ST. There are plenty of great drivers in both classes...but If you look at the average winning packages in SG and SC, he will get pounded in that class unless he is already stellar on the tree and top end.

I'm not a fan of moving young drivers up through the classes too swiftly. If he has the chance to go some rounds and gain some confidence, he will be a better driver in the long run.

how closely do they check wieght on S/St cars? This Ranger should finish out around 2200# cant imagine adding 600# to it to run S/St. Minimum is still 2800 right?

sometimes they do random weight checks. You better be sure your legal, especially after writing your truck is about 2200 lbs.

2800 is for car & driver..........Running at 150+ I wouldn't worry about the extra 600lbs in S/ST

Most guys I know that run that close on weight try to run 15 to 25 lbs over, none of the scales seem to ever read the same................and yes they do ck weight and you never know when.......

Thanks, I imagine 2800# will be hard to reach easily. My son is all of 130# with full driving gear on. I guess I could put steel heads back on the big block, or I could always add a redneck rear bumber ( 4" round tube, and fill it ) May be able to get closer to the 2800#..

We have been talking about running it in 9.90 trim even at bracket races, just so he can get used to the stop, and dialing it right on the number every time. What do you guys think?
