I need to buy a code reader/scanner for use on my bussiness and family cars. We own Ford,GM,and Chrysler cars ranging from 1996 - current. I see many advertised in the 100-300 range, but have no first hand knowledge of their worth. If I can get codes out to narrow down the area to look when a ck light comes on,that wouldhelp me alot. Some of these scanners may have the ability to check data /sensor voltage.
If you have used one you like, let me know, any advice is appreciated. Probably want to spend 500 or less Thanks, Dave

a code reader is just that it will read codes only some of the better ones have book & a cd disk for computer (desk top /laptop) to define the code.
a scanner will give data in real time but a good one can be 2-3k used that has all the up top date disk

I have been shopping for one also. As Jim said a code reader is just that and if you want a scan tool that is capable of doing some of the more advanced diagnostic tests, such as in my case I wanted something that could do diesel diagnostics like injector buzz test and cylinder contribution you are looking at spending a fair bit more money that a code reader.
What I did find that looks good for the price of a code reader is a PC based system from: http://www.autoenginuity.com/ that’s what I’m going with rather than spending a few grand on a real scan tool just for home use.

As an Automotive Instructor that teaches scan tools and diagnostics, I would recommend the autoenginuity pc based tool assuming you already have a pc or laptop.
I wouldn't bother with a code reader unless you have access to the diagnostic trees via Mitchell On-Demand etc and a thorough understanding of sensor and actuator circuits. You'll need a good DVOM, and a DSO would help also. Code readers and most scanners read just generic codes. It takes an upgrade to read manufacturer specific codes, but that's OK. Most diagnostics can be done with generic codes. The autoenginuity allows you to upgrade at a later date. Go PC based and forget about the code readers. |

I bought the AutoEnginuity unit about a year ago and love it. As mentioned, it does far more than just reading the basic codes: You can purchase, at your leisure, additional capability to read the manufacturers “enhanced” interfaces.
They constantly upgrade the software, which is a simple download. Also, you can save a couple of dollars if you purchase the basic unit from them on Ebay, rather than their website: Click here for the Ebay listing. Whatever you buy, get a pc/laptop based unit. Those other products that have some hand-held hardware would seem to be nothing more than a tiny chunk of a laptop that would never have the capability or expansion possibilities of a real computer. Dave -- the one on Ebay seems like the one to buy -- I'm going to order one to use at home........

I use the Snap On scanner and trouble shooter. It reads the manufacturers codes and generic. It also give tons more information as far as voltage readings and much more. Very versitile tool. Bought it on ebay for $400. It is current to 2001.

All the feedback is certainly appreciated. Honestly I knew nothing about the pc based setup. It sure looks like the way to go. I will do a little more reading up on it and then make a purchase. Looks like I can get the unit and as I get better at using it i can get more upgrades.
Thanks to all that responded and keep the info coming as it will be a week or so before I make a move. Thanks , Dave
