As an Automotive Instructor that teaches scan tools and diagnostics, I would recommend the autoenginuity pc based tool assuming you already have a pc or laptop.

I wouldn't bother with a code reader unless you have access to the diagnostic trees via Mitchell On-Demand etc and a thorough understanding of sensor and actuator circuits. You'll need a good DVOM, and a DSO would help also.

Code readers and most scanners read just generic codes. It takes an upgrade to read manufacturer specific codes, but that's OK. Most diagnostics can be done with generic codes. The autoenginuity allows you to upgrade at a later date.

Go PC based and forget about the code readers.
