Oldskool , Update on a few things ???
I knew Mike Moyer when he lived in Va, and ran VMP & Richmond Drag-way ?Mike was a great guy & loved racing . His Firebird is a Olds - powered, I think it was a 403 ci ? It ran 70-80 under the index , I think Mike moved away when I sold my firebird to Dean .. Glad to see he's still racing , looks like he had the car painted .. Al Vanis bought my car from Johnny Rodnite and Won two races in a row !! He was a very- good driver and won a few more races , before he traded 77 Lemans to Bob Michael' for a 77 Firebird S/S .. Then Bob fixed it all (engine + Paint...Then I bought it from Bob 4-5 yrs. ago !! (lost the good engine and built another one !!! * Dean Ribeiro , had found a mint White 1977 Grand Lemans ( white interior+ buckets ) Had it for about 6 mos. and wanted to make it into a racecar ??? So he took out the motor and we built up a 400 ci just like my firebird !!! He came down to my house in Va. on a wed. & thursday after- noon we fired it up and went to VMP !!! Very first pass went - .65 under the index and next pass went -.86 under.. The car went 1.05 under at the LBV in the Summer time when Kyle bought it ??? Then on the way home they Lost it ?? Kyle , then found a 77 Lemans body & replaced everything + Won many Races !!!!!!!

'79 was the last year that a 400 engine came in a Bird. And it came ONLY with a 4-speed manual trans. So, I've never seen or even heard of a '79 400 powered Bird Stocker. If anybody here knows of one, please post that info.
http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...2&MAKE=Pontiac I did see a '79 Bird Stocker listed on several Q-lists. But, it had an auto trans. So, it was probably 403 Olds powered. http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...0&MAKE=Pontiac Therefore, the only later Pontiac powered 2nd gen Bird Stockers I know of are 301T powered. The 301 non-turbo engine was available in some of these cars. IIRC, BIlly Nees said one of these might make a decent Stocker. Anyhow, right now, I only remember 3 names connected to the 301T Stockers -- Neil Smedley, Chris Denton, & Rick Unterseh. I'm sure some of you guys know of others. Anyone with info about any others are encouraged to post your info. Let's kick it off with Neil Smedley. 2/24/01 - div 7-2 - #1 - 1.510 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=84909 4/5/01 - Vegas Summit Nats - #1 - 1.305 under - Won Stock ! https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=83445 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=83224 10/26/01 - Vegas Nats - #1 - 1.319 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=67524 11/3/01 - div 7-6 - #1 - 1.461 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=67835 Chris Denton 2/25/06 - AZ Nats - #7 - 1.171 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop 3/10/07 - div 7-2 - #1 - 1.433 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop 4/21/07 - div 7-3 - #5 - 1.288 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop 2/23/08 - AZ Nats - #6 - 1.100 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop 3/1/08 - div 7-1- #13 - 1.053 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop 3/8/08 - div 7-2 - #1 - 1.626 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop 4/11/08 - Vegas Summit Nats - #31 - 1.115 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop Rick Unterseh 10/30/09 - Vegas Nats - #13 - 1.340 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=196122 2/18/12 - AZ Nats - #1 - 1.009 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=245015 11/6/15 - div 7-7 - #2 - 1.211 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=307822 11/8/19 - div 7-7 - #4 - 1.014 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop The number 5 car was listed as a '78 Bird, driven by Steve Glenn. Anybody have any info on this Bird ? Rick U said they'd just got it running. It was listed with a 400. Was blue, with a white hood. He was told that he could run it that way once, but would have to paint it before allowed to race again. Since it was blue, & in the Northwest, my 1st guess is that it is the former Bill Edgeworth Bird. Who knows, for sure ? ![]() Rick is still running mid 12's, this year. That was good enuff for #41 at this race. 2/28/20 -Tucson NO - #41 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=359978 I assume these turbo cars will run quicker, as you increase the boost. But, considering the weak nature of the 301 bottom end, running less boost is probably a good idea. Last edited by oldskool; 08-24-2020 at 09:37 AM. |

Hey Dave, THANKS once again for the info !
Real sorry to hear about the Olds power in the Moyer car. Only Olds powered '78 Bird Stocker I've ever heard of. http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...px?ENGINE=2859 The '78 Bird could also use a Chevy 350. http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...spx?ENGINE=313 I edited that post, and mentioned instead a '78 400 powered Bird which I'd forgotten about. Only noticed it at one race, the div 7-7 race last year. It was driven by Steve Glenn, from WA. At the time, it was blue. with a white hood. I'm thinkin it may be the former Bill Edgeworth Bird. Would appreciate anyone who can help ID the car. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2019#indextop I may have made a similar mistake with other Pontiacs which were available with non-Pontiac power options. This is especially tuff with the GT Super Stock cars, since most any GM V8 is OK. Because of my racing experiences, it became one of my pet peeves to see a Chevy engine in a Pontiac body that came with a Pontiac engine. So, even to this day, I only wanna talk about cars with a real Pontiac V8 in 'em. I realize that many, if not MOST racers don't share my brand preference deal. But, I'm too old to change, now. So, ya'll will just have to excuse me, OK ? ![]() PS: I don't know this, for a fact. But I ASSUME that if I were to run a 1st gen Camaro in a GT class, using a Pontiac engine for power, there would be quite a few die-hard Chevy guys who would frown on it. But, since I'm a Pontiac guy, I think it's great that some of the Cobalts are now 428 Pontiac powered ! ![]() One of those Cobalts has dipped into the 8's. 2 have won class at Indy. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2016#indextop https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2019#indextop Last edited by oldskool; 08-24-2020 at 01:52 AM. |

I've probably already asked this question. But, once again, I can't remember the answer.
![]() And, I suppose this site has one of the worst search functions I've seen. There was a '68 Bird, which ran back in the late '90's & early 2000's. Sometimes the driver is listed as Jack Treola, sometimes as James Treola. Both names are listed as being from WV. Sometimes the # was 9049. Sometimes it was 3049. 4/4/98 - Rockingham - #18 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=39249 4/10/99 - Rockingham - #8 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=48030 11/4/00 - Rockingham - #25 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=86532 8/24/01 - div 3-6 - #48 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=35636 8/30/02 - div 3-5 - #44 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=73332 10/19/03 - div 3-6 - #56 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=17604 8/7/04 - div 3-4 - #66 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=4220 So, somebody please tell me again the history of this car, & especially who's racing it now. Thanks ! Last edited by oldskool; 08-24-2020 at 11:38 AM. |

I don't recall if you covered Ron Prince's 68 Bird, which stays pretty close to the Brainerd area.It has a Line engine, I believe.

"...I don't recall if you covered Ron Prince's 68 Bird, which stays pretty close to the Brainerd area.It has a Line engine..."
I probably mentioned it. But may have not posted many race results for the car. I suppose the reason for that may have been that it did not post any really big qualifying numbers, or show up in the finals of lots of races, like some of the other cars mentioned here. For SOME driver names, the DRC search function works real good. For some, not very good. And for some, not good at all. Ron Prince's '68 shows up on DRC in 1998. So, I don't know when he started racing it. 8/22/98 - BIR Northstar Nats - #32 - .856 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r1998#indextop 10/3/98 - Topeka - #26 - .760 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=43990 6/24/99 - Sears Nats - #29 - .831 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=51592 8/20/99 - BIR - #20 - .885 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r1999#indextop 8/17/01 - BIR - #44 - .685 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2001#indextop 9/8/02 - div 5-6 - #68 - .697 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2002#indextop 9/6/03 - div 5-6 - #85 - .585 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2003#indextop He's listed driving a '69, in '04. Maybe it was just a typo on DRC, & he was really driving the '68 Bird at these races. Obviously, I don't know. 6/5/04 - div 5-2 - #54 - .536 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop 8/13/04 - Lucas Oil Nats - #53 - .825 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop 9/11/04 - div 5-6 - #73 - .789 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop He lived in MN, so he mostly raced the div 5 races & the national event at BIR. https://www.brainerdraceway.com/facilities/drag-strip/ In '05 he was running real low 11's, in E/SA. Back then, the index was only 12.00. So, an 11.10 would give you a fairly good qualifying number, of .900 under the index. Here's a couple in the 11.10-11.12 range, in '05. 9/10/05 - Earlville - #36 .894 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop 8/12/05 - BIR - #27 - .877 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop 6/3/06 - div 5-2 - #28 - .815 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=115422 5/26/07 - div 5-2 - #30 - .847 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=136082 5/24/08 - div 5-2 - #30 - .796 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=158901 5/23/09 - div 5-2 - #41 - 11.85 index - .777 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=181830 8/14/09 - Lucas Oil Nats - #55 - .657 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=188968 8/13/10 - Lucas Oil Nats - #39 - .469 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=212066 The first 10 sec ET's I found for his '68 Bird were in 2011. This 10.807 is the best I've found. 6/4/16 - div 3-3 - #33 - 10.807 - .743 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=313092 8/13/16 - div 5-5 - #42 - 10.883 - .667 under https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=316804 8/19/16 - Lucas Oil Nats - #32 - 10.831 - .719 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=317027 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2016#indextop 8/18/17 - Lucas Oil Nats - #44 - 10.914 - .636 under https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=329696 In 2018, he qualified with a 10.90, survived 6 rounds of elims, at a div 5 race, but got treed in the final & had to settle for R/U. 8/12/18 - BIR - #38 - 10.906 - .644 under - R/U. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2018#indextop Ran a 10.98 at last year's BIR nat event. 8/15/19 - Lucas Oil Nats - #46 - .566 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2019#indextop He ran 4 div 5 Lucas Oil Series races last year, including the doubleheader at Topeka, & this one at Earlville. 9/7/19 - Earlville - #87 - 10.896 - .654 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=356180 So, he's been racing it a long time, & has made lots of 10 sec runs. By no means the quickest '68 Stock class Bird, ever, but probably in the top 10. I don't have an accurate count. But, I assume there have been less than 10 Stock class '68 Birds, which have been able to run in the 10 sec zone. I only have 7 listed in my Stocker pics files. Hey, if ya'll know of others, please post that info. (1) Leo Glasbrenner (2) Bob Aceves (3) Adam Strang (4) Chris Stephenson (5) Tim Gillespie/Julie Biermann (6) Todd/Duane Hoven (7) Ron Prince Last edited by oldskool; 08-28-2020 at 02:23 AM. |

Saw this today. Don't remember ever reading it before, tho I may have.
"...Sadly Chuck White passed away in 1976. Ken & Art both gave up racing at that time but Bill Kissinger continued racing this T-37 until 1979. Bill then raced a RA IV powered '70 Trans Am until the mid 80's..." This was in an article about a Pontiac that the White bros raced. http://www.tarheeltigers.org/1971-t-...%20Brothers%20 So, does anybody here know Bill Kissinger or anything about the the "...RA IV powered '70 Trans Am..." that he raced ? ![]() Prior to this, the only '70 RAIV Bird Stocker I'd ever heard of was the one Scott Burton built. Would love to have pics & info for this Bill Kissinger '70 RAIV T/A. Last edited by oldskool; 08-28-2020 at 02:30 AM. |

Tried to edit my last post. But when I hit "Save", instead of adding the edit to the existing post, it made a completely new post, below the one I was editing.
The new post included the 1st sentence from my last post, then my edit meant for the previous post, then the last several sentences of the previous post. None of the DRC info was included. I suppose that is one of the strangest things that has happened to me, posting on a forum. While on the subject of site problems, is there some way to refine a search, in order to make it even reasonably usable ? For example, is there some way to make the search function look for a person's full name. Example: John Smith. Rather than showing every time the word John is used plus every time the word Smith is used, you could search only for the times the 2 words are used together ? As mentioned, of all the car forums on which I've done a search, this search function is probably the worst. Or, maybe I just don't know how to properly do a search, here. If there is any help, to make the search function work better, somebody please tell me how. Thanks ! ![]() Last edited by oldskool; 08-24-2020 at 06:58 PM. |

Once again, I MAY have posted this info. Don't remember.
The Knafel 1970 Judge ran in AHRA. It had 2-FA on the window. I thought that was a SS class. But, as the 5th pic below states, the car was the AHRA Stock national champ. Was also an AHRA nat record holder that year, & won class at the AHRA Pro-Am nats. As far as I know, we never had an AHRA track in our area. So, I never knew the rules differences. But, apparently this car ran strong under the AHRA Stock rules. Last edited by oldskool; 08-25-2020 at 05:23 AM. |
