A BIG THANKS for all the info Dave !

For any pics or copies of nat record certificates, etc, that you wanna send me, it is probably more convenient to do it by Email

Same goes for any of you other guys who don't wanna take time to post on this thread. You can all send me your Pontiac info by Email. I'll sort it all out & post some of it on this or the Pontiac SS thread.

Email: speedbarn455@gmail.com

After seeing that Rodnite name, I remembered that it was on some of the early DRC Q-lists. So, I looked up some of 'em. I found this one very interesting. On the list, is the Yacavone Bird & your Bird, the Rodnite '77 Lemans & Dean driving a '77 Lemans, & also Don Himes & Bill Groton, driving '77 GP's -- a pair of each.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=40284

So, (1) what's the history of the '77 Lemans that Dean was driving ?

(2) What happened to the Bill Groton GP ?

(3) #96 is Larry Munk, driving a V/SA '78 Lemans. So, did that car have a Pontiac 301, maybe a 2-barrel ? Looks like it could have had a Buick V6 or a 305 Chevy.

Chad Smith bought the Paul Dilcher Bird, in 2018, which has probably already been mentioned here. He got it down into the 11.70's last year, at this race.

6/7/19 - div 1-2 - #71 - .568 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2019#indextop

Ran 11.514 @ the Dutch Classic.

"...1037 Chad Smith...I/SA...#78 11.514..."

So far this year, there have been 3 div 1 races. The car has not shown up on any of the Q-lists. Don't know what Chad's plans for the car are. A 400 powered '77 Bird is not the best choice for a competitive Pontiac powered Stocker, in 2020. I suppose a '77 350 powered Bird would be better. And even a '78 400 powered Bird should be a little better. But, at 260hp, any '77 body with a 400, EXCEPT a Bird, would probably be a MUCH better choice. But, as always, if you can run your index or quicker & avoid heads-up runs, you have a chance to win the race.

Dean sold it to Kyle Riley, who had a towing accident on the way home .Kyle re-bodied the car and won a race or two with it..I think you might have missed it.
The Stevenson family then had it for years, and now the Larsen family has it.

(3) Larry's car went to Billy and Don..As a 79, it is being raced by Billy , as we speak.

Larry ran the 231 Buick , as V/SA is 6 or 4 cylinder only.

Wow ! That post is FULL of info ! Thanks !

I remember reading that Kyle Riley had a towing accident & did a re-body. But, I'd thought he raced it, for a while, with blue paint & "Who's Next" on the door.

In my mind, I thought the blue car was the one in the wreck. So, I thought the car with the checkered flag treatment was the re-body. So, the re-body had at least 3 different owners. Don't know if it now belongs to Wayne Larsen, or if it still belongs to Jack. Anyhow, Wayne has been driving it this year.

But, apparently, I've never even seen a pic of the '77 body that Dean had. And, who raced the car before Dean had it ?

While on the subject of '77 Lemans, what's the history of the one that Al Vanis raced ? Al won a 2003 nat event with it, nearly 30 years after he won the US Nats, in '74, in a '74 Ventura. Is this another '77 Lemans that has been passed along to several different owners ? It appears to have had Rodnite on the doors, at that '03 race. I actually found a Q-list where Al was driving the Lemans & John Rodnite was driving a Mopar. At some later races, John is shown as the driver. So, from that, I'll assume that Rodnite owned the car & Al drove it, sometimes. If this is not correct, somebody please post the correct info about this car & drivers.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2003#indextop

https://autoimagery.photoshelter.com...Zwm7A--&GI_ID=

And, to show how very little I really know about class racing, I had no idea that V/SA is for 4 & 6 cylinder only cars. I assumed that any small, low power V8, in a heavy enuff body could run the lowest classes.

Also had no idea that '78 car is the '79 Himes/Nees 301 Lemans.

Turns out that there have been a lot fewer Pontiac Stockers than I had originally thought. It's just that many of the same cars kept showing up with different drivers.

While searching for Al Vanis, I found a list with Al driving a '68 Bird Stocker.

So, anybody know who that bird belonged to and/or any of the car's history, either before or after Al Drove it ?

8/14/08 - Toyo Nats - #79

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=165827

Adam Strang was already driving his '68 Bird. Todd Hoven ran a '72 GTO, in '08. So, was this the Truman Fields Bird that Todd ended up with ?

Hey, it's just a guess, but there have just not been that many '68 Bird Stockers, in div 1, in recent years.

So, who has an ID on the '68 Bird Al was driving ?

Todd may have mentioned this, and I just forgot. Can't remember everything.

I need some help from you guys, with an ID on this car.

It was #5 qualifier at the last div 7 race of 2019, at Vegas. The driver is listed as Steve Glenn. The car is listed as a '78 Bird, running H/SA.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop

Apparently that was the only race the Bird made, that is listed on DRC.

Here's a video of some qualifying from that race. On my laptop, this Bird runs somewhere just after the 28:35 mark. Video info says it has a 400 Pontiac engine. It is blue, but has a white hood. Because it's blue & is from the Northwest, I'm thinkin it may be the former Bill Edgeworth car. Does anybody here have a positive ID on this car ?

The 2nd pic below was taken when Ryan Warter was driving the Edgeworth car at a race, after Bill had passed. Looks like the same wheels that were on the car in the 1st pic. I know lots of cars probably run those wheels. But, it's just another reason I think these 2 pics are of the same car.

I purposely saved this car for last. It's what I call the "Yacavone/Batta Bird".

As a Yacavone car, I only found it on DRC, at a couple of races. It's up to Mark if he wants to add anything more about the car or it's race results than he's already provided.

3/7/98 - Gators - #20 - 1.000 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=38726

5/16/98 - Englishtown Mopar Nats - #8 - 1.100 under - L/SA winner.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=40284

I know I've probably mentioned this already. But I just can't help myself. I MUST mention it again. Right below Carol's name are 4 names of other drivers that won their class, in Pontiac powered cars. So, that's L/SA, M/SA. N/SA, O/SA, & P/SA class wins for Pontiac !

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=40283

Don't know exactly when Dave Batta began racing it. A DRC search seems to show that 2001 may have been the 1st year. If that's not correct, somebody can post the correct info. He ran most of the div 3 races.

4/28/01 - div 3-1 - #47 - .782 under - Kyle Riley won this race.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2001#indextop

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2001#indextop

He was bumped out of the Indy top 128, by more than a dozen slow class winners. Ran .798 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2001#indextop

10/13/01 - div 3-6 - #45 - .829 under.

5/17/03 - div 3-2 - #53 .914 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=25756

Looks like Dave came up with a bit more power, for '04.

Oldskool , Update on a few things ???

I knew Mike Moyer when he lived in Va, and ran VMP & Richmond Drag-way ?Mike was a great guy & loved racing . His Firebird is a Olds - powered, I think it was a 403 ci ? It ran 70-80 under the index , I think Mike moved away when I sold my firebird to Dean .. Glad to see he's still racing , looks like he had the car painted ..

Al Vanis bought my car from Johnny Rodnite and Won two races in a row !!
He was a very- good driver and won a few more races , before he traded 77 Lemans to Bob Michael' for a 77 Firebird S/S .. Then Bob fixed it all (engine + Paint...Then I bought it from Bob 4-5 yrs. ago !! (lost the good engine and built
another one !!!

* Dean Ribeiro , had found a mint White 1977 Grand Lemans ( white interior+ buckets ) Had it for about 6 mos. and wanted to make it into a racecar ???
So he took out the motor and we built up a 400 ci just like my firebird !!!
He came down to my house in Va. on a wed. & thursday after- noon we fired
it up and went to VMP !!! Very first pass went - .65 under the index and next pass went -.86 under.. The car went 1.05 under at the LBV in the Summer time when Kyle bought it ??? Then on the way home they Lost it ?? Kyle , then found a 77 Lemans body & replaced everything + Won many Races !!!!!!!

'79 was the last year that a 400 engine came in a Bird. And it came ONLY with a 4-speed manual trans. So, I've never seen or even heard of a '79 400 powered Bird Stocker. If anybody here knows of one, please post that info.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...2&MAKE=Pontiac

I did see a '79 Bird Stocker listed on several Q-lists. But, it had an auto trans. So, it was probably 403 Olds powered.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...0&MAKE=Pontiac

Therefore, the only later Pontiac powered 2nd gen Bird Stockers I know of are 301T powered. The 301 non-turbo engine was available in some of these cars. IIRC, BIlly Nees said one of these might make a decent Stocker.

Anyhow, right now, I only remember 3 names connected to the 301T Stockers -- Neil Smedley, Chris Denton, & Rick Unterseh. I'm sure some of you guys know of others. Anyone with info about any others are encouraged to post your info.

Let's kick it off with Neil Smedley.

The number 5 car was listed as a '78 Bird, driven by Steve Glenn. Anybody have any info on this Bird ? Rick U said they'd just got it running. It was listed with a 400. Was blue, with a white hood. He was told that he could run it that way once, but would have to paint it before allowed to race again. Since it was blue, & in the Northwest, my 1st guess is that it is the former Bill Edgeworth Bird. Who knows, for sure ?

Rick is still running mid 12's, this year. That was good enuff for #41 at this race.

2/28/20 -Tucson NO - #41

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=359978

I assume these turbo cars will run quicker, as you increase the boost. But, considering the weak nature of the 301 bottom end, running less boost is probably a good idea.
