OK, I've already mentioned the '69 SS Bird that Keri Angeles Pari drives. I don't know of another '69 SS Bird. If ya'll know of another, past or current, please post that info.
For now, lets move on to early 2nd gen Birds. I don't think very many have ever tried a '70 model. But, beginning in '71, when the 455HO engine came along, I assume there have been several of these '71-'72 455HO cars run in SS, thru the years. So, can you guys name some of 'em ? I can't think of a one. But, there have been a few '73's running SS, because of the SD455 engine. Still some running. I've mentioned Russ Abrams and John & J.B. Clegg. Found a pic of Bob Michael in a '73 SD455 Formy. The pic is not very good. Does anybody have or know where to find a better pic of this car, as well as any other SS Pontiac he's had ? Anybody know what happened to this Bob Michael car, or how it ran ? Last edited by oldskool; 12-28-2019 at 03:13 AM. |

(1) Johnny Duncan (2) Phil Monteith (3) Herslow & Morlock (4) Phil Szupka (5) Freddy Moore (6) Bob Bales (7) Tony Reiter [8) Bob Michael (9) Ken Shawver (10) Monte Howard (11) Wilbert Thornton (12) Mike Morgan (13) Sal---Not sure if that's supposed to be Sal Biondo, or ? OK, I've mentioned numbers 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, & 12. I found that the Ken Shawver car picked up several US Nats class wins, with both he & Monte Howard driving. Those stats are still posted on DRC. Assume they probably did good at other tracks, also. Some of these guys have had lots of cars, including Bob Michael & Phil Monteith, for sure. Both have had Stock & SS Pontiacs. Haven't seen anything about numbers 4, 5, & 6. Would like more info and/or pics. Found pics of a Tony Reiter car. I'll post some more pics here. Would love to know what major races any/all these guys have won, including big class wins, & nat records. Especially nice if there is some sort of written or online info documenting their accomplishments. And again, if I can't come up with pics of all the cars, would appreciate any pics you guys could supply, or tell me a source for. The 1st pic is the Herslow & Morlock SS car, then the Bob Michael 73 Bird, then what I understand to be the same car after Don Kennedy bought it, then a '77 or '78 Bird with Bob Michael & Bob Peters names on the door, then 2 pics of the Tony Reiter car with slightly different paint. PS: Last night I added some pics, scattered throughout both the Stock & SS threads. Last edited by oldskool; 12-29-2019 at 02:17 PM. |

I did find a couple of more pics of '69 SS Birds.
The first one looks to be the old style small tire SS car. The next one may be the same car that Keri Angeles Pari has been driving for a long time. But it has only John Angeles on the side. Other pics I've seen have Angeles & McCarthy on the sides. So, anybody know if there were more than one of these '69's, that John Angeles had a hand in ? I've read that Keri made the 1st 9-sec pass in one of these Birds. So, I assume whoever drove it before her ran it into the low 10's, Last edited by oldskool; 12-29-2019 at 04:45 PM. |

I always hesitate to bring up his name. Whenever it's mentioned, there are usually a lot of guys chiming in with some real negative comments, especially on the Pontiac sites. But, I've never had any dealings with him. So, since you brought it up, I'll mention it. Ya'll correct me on any info I get wrong in these Pontiac threads, please. OK, I THINK his 3rd gen Bird used a 400 Pontiac engine. He won his GT/DA class at the US Nats, in 2004. While scanning his website, I ran across this. "...On that note it's important to point out that Roy McKinney was the VERY first NHRA Super Stocker running in a GT class of Super Stock with a 400 cubic inch engine to run in the nines back in 1997. Roy deserves that mention. He's one very smart NHRA racer. You may remember his 1968 Firebird in the CompCams ad almost straight up at Indy. Got to find that picture and put it up..." Well, so far, I don't have pic of that GT car. But, I did find a pic of their red '68 Bird. Anyhow, Bruce bought the 3rd gen Hatari GT car, from Phil Monteith. Here's what's posted about it in his site. "...Hatari...Their old car is campaigned by Bruce on the west coast in Division Seven as time and money allows. 08/08/09 PontiacEngines.com Bruce built a new engine for the '82 bird, as the car came minus engine/trans/converter. Bruce will move the car to GT/DA using a 1968 GTO 400 rated by NHRA at315 hp. The GT / Super Stock classes allow any engine from any year, within the same marque. All NHRA cars are weighed after each run... Bruce went to the 2002 NHRA Phoenix Nationals where he drove the car to his first class win. His first NHRA "Wally." Bruce lost the coin toss and had to race both cars in his class. He beat many time national event champion Mark Faul in the first round. Then put a holeshot on the quicker Earl Snow owned small block powered black '87 Firebird for the win. Best ET to that date - 10.05 Best mph - 131.98 Best sixty foot - 1.29. Very impressive for just his third year racing NHRA Super Stock. Bruce built the engine of course. May 25th, 2002 - New National N.H.R.A. eighth mile record set by Bruce. 6.45 at 101 mph. Still standing today - 04/21/03. Bruce is considering a tattoo..."N.H.R.A. Super Stock Record Holder" Ha! (not) BRUCE DID IT AGAIN!! 2003 CHECKERS/SHUCKS/KRAGEN CLASS WINNER!! Also - Went to the third round at the Las Vegas Nationals 2003 - won $300 clams. Beat Bob Mazzolini - the Mopar guru. Was a very cool time. Oh, yeah, Also - won Indy in 2004. (I won Indy!) How cool. Bruce won Indy..." He was indeed the GT/DA class winner at the AZ race, in '02. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2002#indextop https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2002#indextop The next year he moved down to GT/EA, because Don Kennedy was in GT/DA, which he won. I assume Bruce won GT/EA because he was the only car in his class. In round 1, he appeared to be running in the auto combo class, since there were no other cars in his class. Only the 1st round of SS class elims are posted. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2003#indextop Each class winner is listed, even if they were the only car in their class. If I'm wrong on this, somebody correct it. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2003#indextop At the 2004 US Nats, he qualified #92, with a .967 under, 9.833. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop In the class final, a quicker car slowed for some reason, giving Bruce the win. But hey, a win's a win. He turned a 9.829 in the class final. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop So, he's listed as the GT/DA class winner at the 2004 US Nats. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop So, whether anybody likes him or not, he IS a US Nats class winner. And he did it with Pontiac power ! Last edited by oldskool; 12-29-2019 at 07:27 PM. |
