I doubt if found during a spot check after winning a 3rd round heads-up, that they would allow you to put it back on.
As Bob said,...maybe in a year or so.

So I get where the rule book does not allow removing the choke. The reason I started this thread is because it looks to me if you are allowed a "replacement" carb, i.e. edelbrock, or quickfuel, which seems to be legal in stock, it spells out in the carb notes what mods you can do, and that includes removing the choke. That doesn't make sense to me, but that is what I see. Maybe I'm reading it wrong.

Here it is...……

From 2019 NHRA Rulebook Section 11A, page 3

CARBURETOR
Must be correct year, make, and model specified for car’s engine;
fuel or air bleed passages may be resized. Drilling idle holes in
primary
throttle blades permitted. Other modifications prohibited.
Sandblasting, grinding, flash removal, dry film coating, or any
other modification to carburetors prohibited. Replacement
carburetors permitted provided they are same model, type,
throttle bore, and venturi size. Computer carburetors use latest
model non-computer carb for engine application.

It also doesn't say that you can poke a sharp stick in your eye....

Unless it states that it's allowed, it isn't...

PS:
This is also the rule for Super Stock....

What you are looking at are the "rules" for SS/Truck, FWD SS and Super mod and Comp. Go back and read the WHOLE thing .....SLOWLY.....

Other modifications prohibited. Third sentence in stock carburetors in current rule book. For me a 50 cc Reo pump would be great but not allowed, a metering plate change in the end carbs would be great, but not allowed. An inch spacer would be great but not...........

I have learned something today. There are some threads that should have never been started.
I agree the rule book is clear that you can't remove the choke plate in stock. I was merely trying to understand the carb section in the accepted products document

The way I read it, the carb notes that start on page 62, that for stock, SS, SSGT, SSGT truck various mods are listed, including removing the choke plate.
Looking at the rule book for SS and Comp, I don't see anything on carbs at all except they do refer you back to lower classes.

In any event my carb will have the choke plate intact, and if any of the nhra tech auxiliary would like to come by at a divisional, please do.

So they're going to do a spot check....after 3rd round of eliminations...with an entire day of eliminations to get done ..to see if he took his choke plate out? C'mon Mark I was referring to the initial tech Insp. The tech guy's aren't just there to catch people cheating They are there to answer questions concerning some of these items that maybe aren't clear in the rule book . Anyway he has his answer now and that's good

Back in 95 at the Summers in E Town I was pitted at the far end of the spectator side as there were about 140 cars in stock and after winning 3rd round that Sunday afternoon we were told we had about a half hour to cool and be in the lanes for 4th round, temp was in the high 80s. I was heading around the outer lane to cross over to the spectator side when Wesley stopped me and thought it would be a great time to spend 20 minutes going through my carbs as well as other things. I had just enough time to reach my pit and fuel up and when I reached the staging lanes I was near boiling over. I had a great light and the better by far but the car died in high gear due to overheating and I ran a tenth off my dial flat out. I'll always remember Wesley.

Tech can look any time for a spot check. Engine, fuel, wires, brakes, drive shaft, e-shift, and my favorite, the search for loose weight.

Tech in my opinion does two major things at the track: Help keep all of us safe by looking at our safety equipment. Making it mean something when win or loose a heads up race, or any race, by enforcing the rules.

I think they love the sport as much as we racers do.
