Dover Drag Strip Nostalgia Drags Enters 8th Year

What has become the one of the northeast premier nostalgia Drag Racing weekends, The Dover Drag Strip Nostalgia Drags, returns for its 8th straight year, Sept.24, 25, 2016 at Lebanon Valley Dragway, in New Lebanon, N.Y. Started as a one day event in 2009, the gathering of former Dover racers and fans has mushroomed to a two day affair, complete with a rockin’ Rod & Custom Show on Sunday. Organizer Dean (Dino) Lawrence, from his N.C. location, has yearly, added more and more features to the event. It’s a reunion & revival of the glory days of Drag Racing at the famed Dover Drag Strip, in Wingdale, N.Y. The track was a legend in the Northeast, opening in 1961, and finally closing in 1976. Located just 72 miles north of NYC, Dover pre-dated Conn. Dragway Lebanon Valley Dragway and New York National Speedway. Famous racers that called Dover Home included Dick Moroso, Al Hoffman, Bobby Lagana, Drake Viscome, Fred Egloff, The Terenzio Bros., Grady & Gommi, Doc Burgess, NHRA record holders and many more. The stars of the sport were first showcased in the region, with Don Garlits appearing 4 times in the early sixties. Others include Pete Robinson, Chris Karamsenis, Don Prudhomme, Tom McKewen, Dick Landy, Ronnie Sox, T.V.Tommy Ivo, and the fastest Funny Cars and Fuelers of the period. Fans witnessed Jet Cars, Wheelstanders, even the Batmobile.

But Memories fade away, unless you find a way to keep them alive .Mix in a lot of communication, starting with an active website forum, then you hatch the idea of getting the gang back together again. ’”Never in a million years, did I think this would grow to such a popular event for this long”, said coordinator Dino Lawrence. He is responsible for formatting the unique schedule, with racing both days,7 “Dover” eliminators on Sunday ,the “Time Warp Parade’ of Former Dover Race Cars, Nostalgia Funny Cars, the Sunday Car Show & Swap Meet, Vendor displays ,The “Dover Originals” Race Car display and new last year,” Drag Alley’ Nostalgia Race Car exhibit. Participating Groups Include N.E.T.O, Northeast Timing Organization, NENDRA, the Northeast Nostalgia Drag Racing Association, and ECE-East Coast Gassers. Racers from as far as Michigan and Florida expand the cars in competition to over400, during the weekend.Fuel Dragsters Blown Altereds, Funny Cars and Gassers add to the show, with cackle cars an attraction in the pits. This Year the date has been moved up from traditional August to September, to afford a cooler experience.
