Torque wrench

Where do you guys get the torque wrench that measure down to 5 inch pounds to set pinion pre load.I have been looking online and have not found one will go that low.

I will look and check for sure when I get back to the shop. But I think mine is a KD 2955. Its 1/4 inch drive. So I welded a old 1/4 socket to a socket I use when checking preload. That way I don't have to use several adapters to get there. I dont remember where I got mine as I have had it for 15-20 years but they are available online through many places.

Get a dial type or a beam type rather than a clicker. You can't get it right with a clicker.

Ok thanks I was looking for the clicker type,So the dail or beam types or better for checking pinion preload.

You'll need the dial type because you have to keep it rotating to get an accurate reading of the pinion preload.

Yes. Breakaway torque is much higher than the resistance torque.

Dial is what you need or digital. Most digital's have a memory so you can see the highest Tq and watch the rotational TQ as you turn it. I love my digital since I have changed over. I found you can over pull with a click. At least I had a couple of employees that did as Std Operational Procedure. You can't fool the digital. It tells you exactly what kind of pull you made. The Digital for the Tq to yield are even smarter!

I use a beam type, I think mine is a Mac. It works great, stays accurate and measures in both directions. Mine is 3/8ths drive so I use a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter.
