If my memory serves me correct the 4bbl Hi-Po motor only came in the Dart and Barracuda and I think it was a 10.25:1 motor w/solid cam.

The 273 CI wagon only came with a 2bbl Carter Ball&Ball carburetor. Not sure if a 4 speed was available.

I am pretty sure you are going to have to run 8.5:1 CR pistons in your combo. However, a 65 Plymouth Wagon would be a cool piece.

Did the wagon come with a 361 or a 383 in 65? I would check out the big block combo because I think they were available with a 4bbl.

A friend of mine used to run a 1965 Plymouth Valiant with the 273. I remember him telling me the 1965 273 had a bigger carb. From the specs from NHRA, it looks like the Stromberg has a slightly larger venturi than the Carter BBD.

180 273 DP 8.8 1-2 B&B BBD-3843S/SM 3844S/AUTO 2463252 1.5 M 57.3 B,5
Carter Carb sizes – 1437/1063
Strom Carb sizes – 1437/1125

It also looks like the 318s got a bigger carb. I never knew they were different.

The 4 speed is no problem it is legal....160 hp rated stock heads,
167 hp rated with Edelbrock 60767 replacement heads....with the 2 bbl carb, small bore and valves hard to say if the 60767 heads would be worth the cost.....also the Stromberg carb is a legal replacement

With all of the Killer cars in U/SA, and there is a bunch, I would give some strong thought about going with a 361 w/2bbl,or a 383 w/4bbl AFB ! Or even a 426 Wedge w/4bbl AFB ! The parts are available anywhere, and cheap ! No 4sp in Wagons in 65 ! I think ! ..John

You could also get the 235HP 4 barrel 273 in a 65 Plymouth Valiant. I owned a 65 Valiant Signet 2 door hardtop with a 273/235HP 4 speed while I was in Grade 12 in high school. The weak links were the small diameter clutch, and small rearend, which I understand the 66 version had a 8 3/4 diff, but I think all the 273s used a small clutch. Of course that could all be upgraded. Angela Bushmaker races a 65 Valiant 235HP in K/SA here in Div.6, and it runs really well.
