Default Chris Economaki, 1920-2012

Another motorsport legend passes on. I wonder how many people became interested in drag racing as a result of his commentaries on Wide World of Sports?

I dont think he cared much for drag racing--yesterday during the nascar race-one of the announcers gave tribute to him about all kinds of racing and mentioned something like not much interest in the drags-

He may not have liked it but his coverage on Wide World sure was a lot more captivating than anything offered today.

I agree--maybe that is why the announcer yesterday said--The Drags-Perfect name for nhra, Mellow-Yellow-Drags

I used to watch Wide World of Sports religiously as a lad back in the late-1960s to early-1970s. Many great memories...

This 1975 U.S. Nationals appeared as a part of ABC's Wide World of Sports. Much of the show is spent speaking of safety and technical aspects of championship drag racing.

You'll see the legends such as Don "Big Daddy" Garlits, Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney, Raymond Beadle, Don Prudhomme, Don Carlton, Dale Armstrong, and Jeg Coughlin. There's also a cameo appearance by the Tijuana Taxi.

Also featured is the horrendous Top Fuel crash of Dick LaHaie and a three-wheel Funny Car, not on purpose.

Chris Economacki is your host.

Very good video. (38:55 min.)
