Well it seems that this argument of the fastest muscle car built is still going on as mentioned in another thread...so I figured why not open up the can of worms again and talk about it here...since this list was first printed in Muscle Car Review magazine some 25 plus years ago, do you agree with it or not...obviously there are some muscle cars or super cars missing off that list.

It's a list that is questionable, and unreliable at best.
There are so many situations where extremely similar cars have an exceptionally wide disparity in performance. Way too many. One example, there is a full one second spread between a 66 Corvette 427/425 and a 67 Corvette 427/435, when there is no where near a 1 second performance difference between those engines, which only differ in carburetor and intake. The 66 is the second quickest car on the list, and the 67 is the 32nd quickest. ![]() They have a mythical L-72 427/425 68 Corvette on the list, when that engine became the 427/435 in 1967, with 3 two barrel carburetors, and remained that way through 1969. Yet they do not have a 67 L-88 Corvette. The disparities can only be explained by driver ability, "tuning", and track conditions. It pretty much negates anything resembling a factual list. If you look around, you'll find that various vehicles showed up for those tests with trick carburetors and distributors, mauled water pump impellers, gutted alternators, and other tricks. Others were tested after months of abuse in the "magazine test car pool". I suppose it makes "good reading" for the uninitiated.

ya' think ? ! Late 64 Biscayne / or Strato Chief 2dr sedan, 425HP 409 4 speed. People think the 62 is the fast one. It's not, nor is 63 or early 64. Starting late November 63, the mechanical cam 409 got the Z11 cam ( .040"+ more lift, 10+ degrees more duration ), and better heads/springs.

The 66 Olds 442 W30 ran 13.30s back in 1966 bone stock, yet only the 68 H/O made that list.

You also have to take into consideration that the list is full of "ringer" cars.

I wonder why the Max Wedge cars weren't included. A steel nosed 64 415 HP Savoy in good tune off the showroom floor would be a 115 MPH car.

I have read that John Z. DeLorean swapped the 389's for 421's in the G.T.O.'s that Pontiac delivered to the car magazines for road tests, speaking of "ringers." That's the only one that I have read about that was "documented" (I think he mentioned it in his biography,) but I'd bet there were lot more...
More often, though, was the phenomenon of "muscle cars" turning in pathetically slow times in magazine road tests... You'd go to the strip and see cars that were a full-second (and, more) quicker than they were in the magazine tests. Most (not all) of those road tests were notoriously unreliable as a measure of a car's ability. Pratically worthless...

So just for conversation, which Muscle Cars would you pick for the "top 3" in your opinion...and yes I would like everyone to give theirs.
