Default HEI w ext. coil?

has anyone used the old style [big cap] HEI chevy dist and used the adapter cap to use an external coil?
if so, 1. did it work OK? 2. is it worth the $32.00+? 3. thoughts

Been using them for 20 years, no problems at all .... Just follow the instructions , I use the big Acell yellow coil .... Good to about 7,800 RPM.

X2 that coil works good, also works good on an MSD 6AL box. I currently use Crane Fireball Ignition Box, Fireball Coil and Fireball Wires, with the HEI and external coil, vacuum advance lockout "T" and mechanical advance lockout plate
