Not a S/SS car, but I raced against a El Camino at Maple Grove that had a GMC 4V71 diesel in it!
had a hard time chaseing him thru the smoke.

Back in the 70"s a guy from Mass bracket raced a 50"s Chevy Panel Van with a 427, it was a 11 second sleeper.

In the early 90's I ran a "rail buggy" (bracket race) I gave him a .90 spot. He laeft then broke an axle & came into my lane....I got stopped but a very odd race.

1980 Summernationals, Stock Elim, rd. 2, I was running a U/SA 6-banger '71 Nova and I get paired against Bob Bender in his Y/SA Vega wagon. I'm used to leaving first on everyone and here I have to spot Bobby almost 3 seconds! Needless to say, I redlit big time.

It wasnt too bad ,he had a 4" exhaust out the back, but I could still hear it over my car!
If I remember correctly ,it ran in the hi 12's ..Had a small Allison 4 speed behind it. The owner was a diesel mechanic ,and I guess he didnt see enough of them at work.

I'd nominate anyone who had to race me in my first car - a 59 Nash Metropolitan.
It was able to talk my parents into letting me buy it for $150 when I was 14 and learned to drive a stick in the field next to our house. AHRA classified the car as X/FG but I'm not entirely sure the tech guy didn't just pull a class at random since he was pretty well stumped. I won my class at Pacific Dragstrip in Pacific, Missouri the day they gave out free jackets to class winners. In the first round of Eliminator, I came up against a Pontiac Tempest Sprint (OHC 6 cylinder with a Quadrajet) that cleaned my clock in epic proportions. |
