Our metal recycler will take them if you cut off the lid. Its then considered scrap metal.

Hey Bob, how do you cut off the lid without making them go boom? I have been wanting to cut the lower section off one so I can use it for a cleaning pan.

Air chisel or saw ought to do it. I usually rinse them out with water just in case of a spark. JimR

the best thing is pump exhaust gas in them, from your regular car. the carbon monoxide will displace gas fumes. then wash out with water.

Fill it with water...
Our local track takes them once in a while and turns them into trash cans. |

That's how we do it when cutting / welding on natural gas lines that still have some gas in 'em. My Dad always said, "The only time you need to be scared is if the fire goes OUT!" ![]() |

Fill at least one up with stabilized pump gas for when the power goes out and the gas stations don't work.

I never used any of those fancy tools, lol. I just use a chisel and hammer to get the lid off. p.s. It's good to use gloves when you do it this way..
