Hey guys,
What are y'all doing to prevent the alt belt flying out? I guess the simplist is to use a electric water pump and no alt... |

Hey thanks guys,
I went with a deeper grove but I had to stay with the same diameter in order to keep the charging capabilities up.. Here is a post from another form I am on: http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=330257 |

Once I used a stud instead of a bolt in one of the water pump mounting bolts that stuck out past the belt, and used some kind of sleeve over the stud to keep from chewing up the belt. I got lucky that the stud was less than 1/2' away from the belt. All it did was keep the belt under centrifugal force to not expand or "grow" and it kept it on. This was a street/strip car that had the alternator on the driver's side past the valve cover. Long belt!

if your using a delco alternator with the internal regulator ,,you can get a one wire kit that will charge 13.50 at idle and 14.50 at higher rpm and thats with a bigger pulley ,and go with an electric water pump ,,it helps with cool downs gmonde

Depending on the design of your pulleys you may be able to use a narrower belt such as a 3L or 3VX which will sit lower in the groove. As I said it depends on your pulley design. You don’t want the belt to bottom out in the grove.

Good suggestions guys,
Tonight a friend dropped by and gave me some advice on aligning the pulleys. The alternator had to go back about about three eights of a inch.. I also improved the idler pulley by putting some more angle on it, It mostly acts as Mark Faul described.. It seems like in the case of alt belt retention there are a a lot of ways to skin a cat.. Long or short pump?
GM makes a solid bracket for short water pump Corvettes from 75-81 which bolts to the front of the head. I use on my SBC in my 68 Camaro along with a Z28 alternator pulley. I spin it about 7200. |

Hello Cad,
It is a long pump for a BBC, I had some original brackets but they didn't work well for my small casing CS-130 alt... I had a friend over last night and he pointed me in the right direction in terms of alt alignment..The alt was too far forward so I shimmed it back..This should help a lot. Kris |
