Don't re-use the old gears. Get new gears and a solid pinion bearing sleeve.

Sounds like time to upgrade to better axles to match the new spool. A nice set of 33 spline axles and a matching spool, along with a new gear set, and a new installation kit is in order here. Get a spacer and shims instead of the crush sleeve. Package deals can be had to save a decent amount of money.
