What does NHRA allow in SS Modified, Clutchless 4 speeds or 5 speeds or both. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Mike

Recent rule change; you can now run clutchless in traditional SS and that trickles to the modified. Traditional SS still has to run the correct number of forward gears as per OEM.

55's and 56's are allowed to run 4-speeds. The Modified classes are allowed to run 5-speeds.

I still think modified stock is still limited to 4 gears, i thought that might be lifted beings i think lots of the newer cars come with 5 gears. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Yep, forgot about those 3-speed manual exclusions. So how much did those pick up with the 4-speed conversion? It sounds like those that lost the PG in exchange for a turbo type trans picked up a bunch.

Nothing in 60', 330, 660, 1000 or 1320. Dave Smith, who built the Pro-trans in my son's GT/BA Camaro, watched several runs at Bakersfield and swore the car LOOKED faster but comparing time slips showed NO difference. He felt perhaps flogging ratios or converters might find something, but it would be insignificant. Now this was just my combo. Your results may vary. The PG is back in mine since the Winters, just in time to trash my last set of 520 heads. The fun never ends.

I was talking to Kip Martin and he said the SS/LA really made some ground on his SS/L Mustang. Of course that is a class populated by the small V-8's, 283 & 289 and I would think a Turbo would provide more benefit than a larger mid-size V8.
But as you've found out, you've got to open up that wallet to find out! But now you know...
