John-Research is always fun, especially when it's productive. The 427/390 engine was an optional big car or Corvette engine that was functionally identical to a 396/325 or 350.It took the same heads and intake as the 396-intake ending in 948,easy to find. The optimal head is the 290 small-plug head cast for the 1970 402 and 454. Go find a good 2 bolt main 454 out of a pickup truck made in the early-mid '70's. A good 396 crank completes the package. The cam on this engine is the same as the 396 350 horse-around.460/480 lift on the intake/exhaust. You used to be able to find these engines in 66-68 Chevy Impala and Caprice wagons and decked out sedans. The vette version had a flat intake made of aluminum or cast iron, resembling the 70-72 402 intakes- definitely not the set-up,but probably illegal in the big car anyway.Back in the days of Orange County Raceway, around 1980-82 or so, two guys had an immaculate yellow Caprice wagon with one of these that they were playing with. It went 11.80's, pulled two foot high wheelstands, and looked like fun. I definitely think the 5.38's they were running were a bit much, but it took that much to launch that living room that hard. Build this thing and let us all see how it turns out!!

Not trying to change the subject here but Greg, do you recall the best times for that P/SA effort years ago? A friend of mine was curious....he had a '65 4-dr. in P/SA with a OEM-piston motor and went some 13.50's @ 97 with a 5.57. Now getting back to the thread, many years ago, I saw one of the most famous 427-Big Chevy stockers...the "Lead Sled" '69 wagon of Tom Aiken from Iowa, I believe. It was at an AHRA national event, and I think he won that day. I think he was AHRA National Champ for a year or too, and set records as well. Does anyone remember the car? Was that a 427/385hp?

Of course the veteran racers here will probably remember the '66 Biscaynes of Willey Cossey, Isykowski, and later Bobby Blankenship...and perhaps others. Darn, I hope I got the spelling on the first two right!

13.60's at 98.It screamed its lungs out because it had the wrong converter in it. It needed a tighter stocker converter, nut a super stock converter,a 2.18 low gear, not a 1.98, and 6.14's were a little too low. That was before radial tires, the acceptance of the 459 intake, the good thin valves, the Venolia or CP pistons, and the good rods. Otherwise,I was in the ball park. Now we have 65-66 Chevelle wagons that go 12.70's at 101 with this setup. The best P.SA that we ever had around was a 66 Chevelle wagon that Cal and Mary Ann Method had that Tony Janes bought. It went 13.30's at 99 when the index was a 13.74. Those were some days!!

Tim Quigley ran a 66 Biscayne with a 396 auto for awhile. He later changed to a 283. We took him to the dark side and put a Jerico in it. It was an O or P stick car. A real blast to drive! Had set the O and P records several times with it. Went 12.19@106 in O back when that was fast in O. Never really had a good clutch in it. It was so violent, it would rip the center out of the clutch at times!
