My grandson has a 66 GTO with the 389 engine AND HEADERS--- does any one know of a short or shorter than stock oil filter that will work so that we do not have to drop/remove the headers to change the oil filter every time ---thanx Comp 387

Dick,
Tell your grandson to put in a Chevrolet engine and that will cure the problem. Hope all is well. Steve |

Re: 1966 389 pontiac oil filter
Pontiac also had a filter adapter that rotates the filter back at a 45 deg angle . Available from some of the Pontiac restoration sites. Used on Gen 1 Ram Air Firebirds, and 428 HO in 67-69 B-bodies. Then you can run a full size filter.

Re: 1966 389 pontiac oil filter
Been there done that. First of all he will need the angled oil filter adapter if he does not have one. Then purchase a NAPA Gold 1522. This filter will be a little smaller in diameter and shorter.
BTW...the angled oil filter adapter will point the filter towards the engine. |

Re: 1966 389 pontiac oil filter
AC, PF 61 is the small dia, full length filter. .....307 Olds
It's usually not the length that's the problem. It's the diameter, and getting it in and out of it's location.

Re: 1966 389 pontiac oil filter
FED 387,
Just what Mark & ss3011 said on the adapter... You can also use a walmart filter #3675 small dia/ full length... There is a small dia/ skort length but I didn't have number.. Filters work great and also fit my 5.7 + 6.0 GM Suburban....
