With car on level surface where is best place to put protractor to check/adjust pinion angle?

I always drop the shaft but that is my preference

dan if its a rear cover style remove the cover and use the cover surfice.
if its a ham type use the mounting surface if the housing is empty or you can remove the driveshaft an use the flat on the front of the pinion

Only trust the yoke if it's a machined billet piece from Strange or Mark Williams . .....The forged or cast type are sometimes ground ,not machined at the U- bolt surface. ...........this method works well otherwise. ..Tom
