We put heaters in the oil pans and hydraulic tanks of heavy equipment on a regular basis, the general rule was no more than 10 watts per square inch of heating element. High wattage units made for water will cook the oil. More info here, https://www.warrenelectriccorp.com/a...rs/default.asp
