To date, the Cummins has had six automatics put behind it. They are:
1) 727-Chrysler built
2) 47RH-Chrysler built-basically a 727 with an OD unit and Hydraulic Governor
3) 47RE-Chrysler built-basically a 727 with an OD unit and Electronic Governor
4) 48RE-Chrysler built-basically a 727 with an OD unit and Electronic Governor-High Torque Capacity
5) AS68RC-Built by Aisin Seiki-Six Speed-Fully Electronic-Has PTO Provision
6) 68RFE-Chrysler built-Six Speed-Fully Electronic
Starting with the 47RH, the alpha-numeric code describes the model designation:
The 4 means 4 forward gears---- a 6 means 6 forward gears
The 7 means high torque capacity-----an 8 would be the highest torque capacity
The R means rear wheel drive
The H means hydraulic control----the E means Electronic Control-----the FE means Fully Electronic Control
As already stated, the Cummins has it's own bellhousing pattern or block plate pattern-however you want to describe it. It is different than the SB and BB patterns. As already stated you could switch the block plate if you wanted to try a Ford or GM transmission.
If you are not going to use a controller, the 727 or 47RH would be your only option as they require no electronics to function.
