Oooopppsss tranny cooler suggestions ?
Ok....I didnt like the cooler we had so it went back....it was too big and too heavy.
I completley forgot to buy a replacment for it. I need something SMALL , and LIGHT, Paul at TA said they make (but he didnt know who) a smallish like 4 in thick maybe 7 wide cooler with 2 fans.....anyone know of anything like this ? Air flow will be OK where its going to mount, but if I can get one this size I can mount it in the nose in the lower grille... Otherwise it will be in front of the driver front inner fender below the engine compt apron above the spash apron I can if need be direct some airflow from the lower grille. Its a 904 and the car will be doing pretty hot laps during testing/changeup there will be a tranny temp sender to the Racepak so Ill know where Im at.... Any suggestions on something small but capable ? I cant believe I forgot this, I was making a list of fittings to go down to Summit on Sunday and well it became glaringly evident I had nothing to connect the other end to.... |
Re: Oooopppsss tranny cooler suggestions ?
I don't know if this will help. But I asked a few people about the same question.
And It seems like the general concensus was no cooler at all. I just run a jumper line from fitting to fitting. So far it has worked fine. |
Re: Oooopppsss tranny cooler suggestions ?
I know a lot of people who run the by-pass set up, and get away with it. I use a 2 tube power steering cooler that is about 2" wide and 6" long mounted under the car next to the trans. Also use an aluminum oil pan that hold an extra 2 quarts of lube.
Was runner up at Vegas bracket race in August that took 6 rounds to get there, trans temp never went over 200'. |
Re: Oooopppsss tranny cooler suggestions ?
I had that suggestion from Paul at TA, but when I told him my testing/dyno plans.....he thought a cooler might be in order. And a couple here....
Ive been kicking it back and forth and I think Im going to take the suggestions here and run shy of it. I like the simplicity and the weight factor.....If I get hot too fast Ill either a)look into whats wrong with the trans coverter set up and b)invest and install a cooler... But the coin Im saving Ill spend 50 bucks on a good fluid temp sensor and add tranny temp to the Digital display software... Thanks all here and the PM's decision made, problem solved...... Quote:

Re: Oooopppsss tranny cooler suggestions ?
I agree with Pat also. Do you have a cooler intank to the radiator? If so, use it, that should be sufficient. If you don't have an intank cooler just take a piece of transmission line material and bend it in an "S" shape about a foot wide 3 passes high and mount it in front of the radiator to create a heat sink.
It takes an enormous amount of slip heat in the transmission to create enough heat to get you the danger zone. A lot of guys will eliminate their lines from the intank cooler and go to a remote (air to oil) cooler which is a mistake. An intank cooler is approx. 2 degrees cooler than an external cooler. |
Re: Oooopppsss tranny cooler suggestions ?
Yeah none on the rad....no option there,
I was thinking of a "rail cooler" previously....but wasnt sure about the rules on that being rear of the firewall..... |
Re: Oooopppsss tranny cooler suggestions ?
I believe an in-tank cooler also helps the trans reach operating temperature sooner, which would help in cooler air temperatures.
Just my .02 |
Re: Oooopppsss tranny cooler suggestions ?
If I am not mistaken there is no rule in the NHRA/IHRA rule book that specifically forbids a homemade rail cooler.
I did a lot of vehicle level testing on oil coolers and lines where we would artificially dial in 20% slip into the transmission (generating an huge amount of heat), towing a 25,000 lb. towing dyno, at 110 degrees ambient temperature. Even with all of that the truck we were testing took a while to make max. allowable temperature. Under no circumstances will your race car ever see those type of conditions. It will be trial and error but monitor your temperature gage. I like to use the intank cooler because as someone else said the transmission will reach operating temp faster. Even in hot weather the intank cooler cools better than the external (air to oil) cooler. Let us know how things work out. NJK |
Re: Oooopppsss tranny cooler suggestions ?
Drooze i have a frame rail Jr. cooler it's right in front of me it's 2 1/5 " wide by 18" long & I bet it dosen't weigh 6oz. it was $41.30 from Summit wth discount. it's what I had on the silver car & worked great. The Cutlass dosen't have a cooler on it but the Z-28 is going to be driven a little bit on the street that's why I bought it.

Greg, what stall speed converter are you going to use in the street car?
