Hydraulic Fluid in automatics
Would someone who has used hydraulic fluid in their automatic transmissions be willing to share the advantages and/or disadvantages to using it over regular ATF. - Thanks!!

Re: Hydraulic Fluid in automatics
I can not imagine what the advantage would be. Sure be interesting to hear.

Re: Hydraulic Fluid in automatics
It is more consistent from run to run. We use John Deere 303

Re: Hydraulic Fluid in automatics
I recall reading numerous posts about this on YB many years ago.

Re: Hydraulic Fluid in automatics
a respected/experienced converter builder tells me it "tightens" the converter 200 RPM. After some experimentation, I have settled on name brand Dexron/Mercon III. [that is to say, not a house brand] Valvoline, Pennzoil, Castrol, etc. The house brands, while OK for basic passenger car service, do not have the premium additive package to resist heat over time.

Re: Hydraulic Fluid in automatics
The specific gravity of the fluid will have more influence on the stall speed than the viscosity. Synthetic fluids change viscosity less with temperature than dyno fluids so will be more consistent, look for a fluid built with group 4 base stock.
Confusing, yes, I do this stuff for a living. Jim Mantle V/SA 6632 |

Re: Hydraulic Fluid in automatics
I long time friend and serious bracket racer who owns a trans shop told me it does run a little more consistAnt but if you get into close back to back runs it doesn't stay as cool as regular trans fluid

Re: Hydraulic Fluid in automatics
I run the John Deere Hygard fluid in mine ( $ 17 a gallon)

Re: Hydraulic Fluid in automatics
I understood in using it to tighten a N/A converter that gets nitrous applied to it. With nitrous a converter becomes way to loose and with the hydraulic oil it will bring it back 3-400 rpm's
