'Back in the day' info requested

Does anyone out there have some old National Dragsters and could check to see what the SS/U (Super Stock-U) record was circa 1972-1974? I bumped into an old friend who started to build one then but quit due to $$$$$. He says the 'hitters' in the class at the time were Jack Mullins and a guy named Pacey with Pontiac wagons, and a guy from Texas with a '55 Chevy called 'Charlie Brown'...and some guys from Ohio with a Chevy wagon. Thanks for your time!

Myron Piatek 06-16-2007 05:34 PM

I haven't seen him in a while, but there was/is a guy with a '55(?) Nomad/panel wagon named "Charlie Brown" in SS that runs IHRA, possibly Div. 9 (Carolinas)
Unfortunately, I don't recall his name at the moment.

If it is the same person & someone remembers his name, that might be a start to track him down and get the info first hand!

This may help you on the Mullins Pontiac:

The Ohio Chevy you are speaking of may have been Larry Nelson and Duane Brock. Nelson may still work at Jeg's.

Neil Smedley 06-16-2007 08:41 PM

SS/U cars that i remember from that era..........Kyle Brothers, Columbus, Ohio 55 chevy War Wagon.....John Lingenfelter 66 chevy wagon...Jack Mullins 63 Pontiac wagon Helena, AR....Lamar Vaubel Hebron, Ohio 55 chevy Buckeye Shaker....Pay Hardy 55 chevy Covina, Ca.....Barry Raichlin 55 chevy Buffalo, NY.....Paul Dilcher 55 Chevy Buffalo, NY and Ontario, Ca.......Daryl Summerton 55 Chevy Elma, NY.....Ronald Domagnue 55 Chevy Tuff-E-Nuff Gulfport, MS....Johnny Jordan 63 Pontiac wagon.....Charlie Hampf 55 Chevy Witchcraft Delmar, DE.....and the 55 Chevy from Texas might have been Hutchinson.......After a few more beers I might remember some more.........

Neil Smedley 06-16-2007 08:49 PM

And without digging into the hundreds of old Dragsters that I have, I think the record was around 13.30 at the time............

Chuck Norton 06-17-2007 12:29 AM

Neil, I drove Val Hedworth's '55 4-door at the Lion's points meet during Juy, 1972 and set the SS/U record at 13.54. Dilcher was outraged! Of course, the whole thing was choreographed while Val drove my regular ride, Richard Salcido's Camaro to set the record in SS/LA. At the next meet he was in a position to reset the record in SS/U. No one could have anticipated that he would sell his combination in a SS/V wagon at the end of the U.S. Nationals that summer.

What golden days in S/S eliminator!

At Sealey, Tx about 4 ,maybe 5, years ago I saw Hutch standing behind the starting line watching the races. I walked up to him & spoke & he retured the acknowledgement, got on his bike & rode off into the pits. Didn't see him the rest of the weekend. Still looks the same, just older like we all do....We all just called him Hutch, I think there was supposed to be a Robert in the front of that.
I think Jack is still in Helena Ar. I saw him quite a few years ago at Eastex Race Cars. Vic was building a Comp altered with some kind of secret German Engineered engine. Another East Texas stand out with the old 55 chevy was Marshall Corley. I believe his was a SS/P. I ran into him last year ar Rusk. He is still active in engine building. He has turned some of the SS & stock engine tricks to work for dirt racers.

Adger, you being a Texan, should have also mention Jake Foyt. Here in South Louisiana, we had Ronnie Domangue "Tuff E Nuff" who runs A/SA now and Johnny Duzat "Instint Grits" who just set the record in D/S. I remember every time Duzat set the record that Larry Nelson and that crew from Zanesville Ohio would reset it.

Greg

ps James Lee is still out there running.

If I remember correctly, Jack Mulllins was #1 qualifier at Indy in 1975 with a 12.38. He edged out Buddy Ingersol's '72 Cutlass (changed from a '71 to take advantage of a lower hp rating that Farmer negated in the tech line on Wednesday). I saw him go 12.17 at Carlisle, AR a few weeks after Indy.

Joe Sprint Bros 06-19-2007 04:10 PM

Mike Boyles still owns and drives "Charlie Brown", usually at the Classic Gear Jammer races and Div 9 IHRA, nice guy and a real crowd pleaser.

Nice pic and info on Gear Jammer site, under members, http://www.classicgearjammers.org/ . Joe.

Neil, how can remember all those names? Myron, my buddy says that NHRA ran the sticks and autos separately down to Q and QA, then combined them in the slower classes from SS/R through SS/X. That Hutch car may have been called 'Good 'ol Charlie Brown'.....He also remembers a '55 Chevy in the class sponsored by the US Army, and a couple of guys in NY....Bob Davies and a Bob Mech??? Wanted to know if anyone remembers a guy down South with a '60 Chevy named Lightfoot (not the singer), and a guy with an early Olds named Hear, probably in a lower class....Were the early Olds cars sticks or autos? Sorry I posted here....too many Buds...but here's a real tech question.....Whatever happened to Stroh's beer???

Adger Smith 06-20-2007 08:00 AM

Hey SS,
I think Stroh's had a brewery (refinery) in Longview Tx. I think it was closed when the beer companies started all this buy-out & brand suffle a few years ago. I have a customer that worked there & we were talking about it the other day. He said the Brewery (refinery) part was disassembled & they are still using the warehouse for another brand, can't remember which. I would assume that you guys consumed the remaining Stroh's inventory !!!

SS, Randy Heer ran the "OLDS SPIRIT" I think 52 olds. It was always a stick car. After that he ran a couple of cutlasses in stock and super stock. About twenty something years ago, he purchased a 69 camaro from Jerry Dover which was Kenne Koonce's A/SA car. He still runs it today but they still call him the Rocket Man.

Adger, speaking of East Tex, how many of these do you remember ?

Adger Smith 06-20-2007 04:13 PM

Wow, Bud..
A walk down memory lane. Thanks,
I have spent a few hours at that place.
I think the first car is one I purchased in 1977 from Dennis Faerman. He ran in F & G/MP It had B. Jones & D. Faerman on the door when I bought it and was a silver color. It is still around here in Arkansas some where.
Dennis Faerman
Lyle Cherry (V.W) ?
Herbert Bushnell
Eddie Conrad
Pete Perry
Curtis Keene (Keene & Smith)
Bill Gibbs
Glen Self (Stormin Six)
That had to be in the early 70's I hope I identified those correctly & didn't butcher the spelling too much. I'm sure I could or should recognize a few more, but .... Age.
There were some real fine races @ East Tex. it's a shame it is a retail shopping center now. When I go by it I can't even tell where it was. There are some real well know racers that have passed through those gates. Some went as far as being Pro's.

wannabe, I think the 60 Chevy you are thinking about was Morris Lightfoot from around Bowling Green Ky. If I remember correctly he was usually fast.

I'm actually drinking a Stroh's right now! It used to be brewed in Detroit, but now your guess is as good as mine. I think they're owned by the same people as Pabst.

Yup, owned by Miller. Read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroh_Brewery_Company

Also, note that they've changed their slogan from "America's Fire Brewed Beer" to "America's Premium Brewed Beer."

Edit: Bud, awesome video!
