Super Stock classification
Can someone please explain how the classification process works for super stock. I understand how it works for stock but I understand that its different for super stock

Depends on which flavor of SS you are talking about. "Back in the Day" there was Stock and Super Stock,. In these pure forms there isn't any difference in terms of body style, weight and engine (on the outside) between the two. NHRA assigns cars Factors based on shipping weight and HP rating. A 68 Mustang Coup 302 auto has the same factor in both S and SS classes, but there are different breakdowns in each. That car is K/SA or SS/LA natural classes. Where SS classification goes nuts is with all the "New School" classes like GT, Modified Stock and Modified. Here engine swaps and extensive allowed internal machining move the classification to the weight to cubic inch style of math that used to be used for Gasser and Altered classes
For SS, find the car in the NHRA Stock Car Classification Guide and locate the factor number under the ** (double asterisk) and take it to the Rule Book SS section. For other branches of SS, consult the oracle... Yes, I date back to flag starters... |

What I was referring to is the math portion. Shipping weight minus 250 and then plus 250 or something like that I know how to do it for stock but I'm told its different for super stock

Let say you have a 2016 Camaro and a 427 LS and you want to run in Super Stock.
Say The Camaro will fit FSS/C or C Auto at 7 lb. per h/p. The 427 is NHRA rated at 470 hp in Factory stock and Factory Super Stock 470 hp X 7lb. = 3290 lb. NHRA adds 170 lb. for avg. weight of a driver LOL I wish 3290. + 170. = 3460 lb total weight of the Camaro I hope this helps. Luke |

Traditional Super Stock (SS/xx) is the same as stock natural class up one down one. Where the 250lb come into play is GT/ in GT you could fit 3 class or 5 class if it a low hp combo.

They should put all this info in one place. From the 2020 SS Weight section.
"WEIGHT All cars will be permitted to run on the class minimum weight, but may be no heavier than the minimum for the next heavier class. Car can move up (lighter) one class or down (heavier) one class. If weight is added, must be properly attached; see BALLAST. In cases where NHRA has placed a performance rating on the engine, use the factored horsepower. Class and classification weight are determined without driver. Once classification weight is calculated, 170 pounds is added for driver to arrive at total weight. All cars are weighed with driver." BALLAST: 100 LBS MAX. Note that there are two weights here: Shipping weight from the guide and total (scale) weight at the track. Class is determined without driver. I don't know if class would change if you were at the max weight for a class and adding 170 would put the scale weight one class down. The goal in adding and subtracting 100 lbs in SS is to let you place the car at a favorable weight. If you are at the bottom of a class, adding weight would let you run at the top of the next class down. A better place to be. When you get into GT and Modified the weight adjustment increases to 250 but you have to determine the shipping weight differently. Someone should make up a worksheet on classing a Stock or SuperStock car and pin it here. |

Yes!!! It was GT I was referring to I cant quite figure out how to do the math as in what gets added and what gets subtracted

In GT the most weight you can subtract from the shipping weight is 250 lbs . This may not allow you to get to the bottom of the class . This still allows you to run in that class .

I can follow the Stock and super stock classifications its the GT classes that I don't understand. Say I want to run a 352 engine in a 1968 Mustang. How do I determine the class?

To figure a car for SS/GT you first need the shipping weight of the car. Ex...1968 Mustang hardtop (coupe) with heaviest engine as found in the NHRA Classguide weighs 3253 lbs.

(Note: the top class GT/MA cannot go to the class break of 12.00 because the shipping weight of 3253 has already had the max of 250 subtracted. GT/M would be 3003 + 170 = 3173.) All outer classes can use the class break when figuring the minimum scale weight. |

SuperStock GT Classification Worksheet 1. SHIPPING WEIGHT Find the shipping weight of the body you want to run in the NHRA Stock Car Classification Guide. Use the heaviest weight with the same transmission you want to run. WEIGHT____________________________________ 2. ENGINE Find the engine you want to use in the same Guide. Find the GT Factor box at the top of the page and enter it here. HORSEPOWER_______________________________ 3. WEIGHT TO HORSEPOWER FACTOR Divide the weight by the HP numbers you listed above. This is the Factor used to determine the GT class of your combo. WEIGHT/HP = (_WT__________ / __HP________ = __________) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE 68 Mustang Coupe running a 2007 330. (A 2008 or later 330/500 is Factory GT) WEIGHT: 3241 (68 Coupe 428 auto) ENGINE HP: 330/500 HP FACTOR: 3241/500 = 6.48 NATURAL CLASS: GT/AA (Add 49 lbs to move to the top of GT/BA) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WEIGHT CHANGES You may add or subtract up to 250 pounds to change classes in GT. After class is determined, 170 lbs is added for “driver weight”. This is your Scale Weight. You can’t be lighter than your Scale Weight. |
