weight.....help

I have a 1980 malibu wagon. classification with a 305 makes it a natural M car. (14.33)- it has been run as a "N" car. The nhra tech sticker on the car says wt 3405 cid 305 hp 180/230. I have tried to figure that weight - is that accurate ?

Re: weight.....help

N - 14.50 to 14.99

14.50 * 230 + 170 = 3505 lbs.

Looks like a mistake on the sticker, it's 100 lbs light.

thats what I thought. I like the mistake number better!! I knew I could do math ! With the new rules, can a natural M car weight down to O ?

Re: weight.....help

You can run 1 class up or 1 class down from it's natural class (M).
L- 3275 lbs
M- 3390 lbs
N- 3505 lbs

Jeremy K . Is exactly right, up or down one class from natural class only !!
Good luck with your project...............

Re: weight.....help

wagonboy, you can change the header panel to make your wagon a1983, then you can run M, N, O. Tom

Re: weight.....help

Tom,

I was looking into that. Too bad NHRA factors that year 305 at 230hp too. I need to get my trans and converter sorted out- get the correct amount of weight in the car and see what happens. Thanks for the info.

Charlie,

The "dark side" is more difficult than Darth Vader said it would be. That 83 header looks good- move to- O- you and me in a .10 under heads up battle,( providing there is a tail wind) whew, I'm sure they will fill up the stands to see that one.

Re: weight.....help

Pat,

Trying to. I figured I was not loosing money fast enough with a bracket car. I want more abuse- and a higher price tag for the abuse. My wife really talked me into it......... she thought there might be a more effective way to burn money! So I gave in and got a stocker. I am still racing the Falcon and will be till the dinosaurs come back.

Good to hear from you. I will chime in once I take it back out in a month or so.

Re: weight.....help

ok, bear with me here. If my car fell into N naturally - would the recipe for weight be 14.50 x (hp) 230 = # plus driver weight OR would it be where the car falls 14.66 x (hp) 230 + # plus driver weight. I understand if I move to O- I would multiply by 15.00- the lowest number. Question is for my natural class would I use the 14.66 or 14.50 (min) ?

Thanks

Ryan

You can use the top of each class' weight break to figure class minimum weight. 14.00 (M/SA), 14.50 (N) and 15.00 (O) x NHRA rated HP + 170 = minimum weight for each class.

Re: weight.....help

Thanks Mike, and Tom.

Tom, looks like the cam is a little bigger for the 83 too! That may help a little.

Raul- I am trying to. I am on the cusp of getting her under, so we will see. I will run mostly div if I can get .2 under or so.

Thanks

Ryan

Re: weight.....help

Wagonboy, the cam is the same 1980 to 1983, The bigger cam motor has flat top piston`s and small cam motor has dish piston`s, the large cam motor runs in j,k,l -253 hp. Tom
