Lynn Ellison 2017 Top Dragster National Champion

And another 2017 Champion was crowned that is no stranger to winning, Lynn Ellison has won in other NHRA categories such as Super Stock and Super Gas but over the past few years has turned his sights to Top Dragster and has been rewarded with the #1 for the scoop of his dragster for the 2018 season. His season would start out on the east coast at Atlanta, GA for the national event the first week in May and only accumulated 41 points for his 2nd round loss. Well, that did not sit well with “Pirate” as 3 weeks later he attended the JEGS SPORTSnationals in Bowling Green, KY and came away with his first trophy of the year and added 95 points to his total.

Over the next 2 months Ellison would only travel to 2 different tracks for a total of 4 events but only walk away with 115 claimed points (2 events were eventual throw aways). First on the agenda was the divisional in Chicago, IL where i’m sure Ellison would like to forget he even made the tow because it was the only time he was dropped in the 1st round all year. A few weeks later would be the Fallen Patriots Route 66 nationals again in Chicago where he would chalk up a semi final finish and 63 counted points. Following the 2 Chicago events was the double divisional event in Topeka, KS where it would be a 2nd and 3rd round loss for Mr. Pirate bringing his Championship point total up to 322 in 6 events.

At the half way point in the season, Ellison only has 2 more events to claim then would have to start bettering on his first half of the season scores. Entering the month of August, this was Ellison’s “race heavy” month with 4 races on the schedule and this is the point where he would solidify his run, getting to the final at 3 out of 4. Starting out with a divisional win at National Trails Raceway in Columbus, OH, Ellison added another 95 before heading over to Indy for a double divisional the following weekend. This double divisional was not a planned one as the first Indy divisional event was rained out, so it was rescheduled to be run in conjunction with the 2nd event. Ellison would start slow, going down in the 2nd round but would rebound and score a runner up finish to end his weekend. 2 weeks later he would repeat his performance at the Bowling Green divisional with another final round appearance but would have to settle for 2nd.

Collecting 243 points over the last 3 events, Ellison was looking good in the standing but had room to improve. Another month went by before he would tow to the St. Louis, MO national event for a 3rd round finish, followed by a 4th round finish the next weekend at Noble, OK divisional, ending his Championship chase with the eventual winning 568 points giving him the 2017 Racing RVs Top Dragster Crown!
