Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Another dummy question. Why do stick GT cars sometimes get less hp than auto GT cars, when using the exact same engine ?
Is this a common NHRA practice ? I'll use the popular Stocker '77 400 engine as an example. This page shows 5hp less for stick GT cars, than auto GT cars. http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...4&MAKE=Pontiac While mentioning stick cars. Does anybody know of any Pontiac V8 powered stick GT cars, either current or former ? Last edited by oldskool; 01-07-2020 at 12:01 AM. |

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
OK, ya'll gonna have to help me with this one.
As of the 2019 season, I assume that the 3 quickest Pontiac powered GT cars belong to Robert Cruzen, Todd Frantz, & Don Kennedy. We know Robert has gone 8.90's. At the US Nats, Todd & Don both went 9-teens. And I suppose Don has the quickest car with both a Pontiac engine & body, since the other 2 mentioned are Cobalts. If others are quicker, ya'll please post that info. What other Pontiac powered GT cars are planned to debut this season, if any ? Just guessing that with the success of the 428 GT cars, there might be other converts. I suppose this is especially tempting to non-Pontiac guys, since the alum head 428 can now be built without any Pontiac factory parts. As always, correct me if I'm wrong. |

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Again I'll ask for purpose built Pontiac powered GT cars, that haven't been mentioned. I wasn't keepin up with racing during the '90's & early 2000's. So, there must have been some other decent GT cars.
Even lookin at the DRC nat event records from 1998-up, I can't tell exactly which GT cars may have had Pontiac power. I know that the Hatari 4th gen is probably the most famous, because of all that Peter Biondo did with it. But there were probably other good ones built, that very few know about. Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Yeah, I think the 2 McCarty cars have been mentioned. But, I think I have pics. If so, I'll post 'em here.
At the 2011 US Nats both cars are listed. the GT/AA car was #25, & the GT/DA car was #134, listed as a '90 Bird. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2011#indextop At the '13 US Nats there is a GT/CA car listed as an '87 Bird. It's #85. The Bird in my pics has the earlier nose on it. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2013#indextop Last edited by oldskool; 01-09-2020 at 04:28 AM. |

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
When I first noticed this 3rd gen GT car, it belonged to Vic Santos. Ran strong.
I'm also posting a Q-list showing the car #1. Bill Kennedy bought it. Last edited by oldskool; 01-10-2020 at 01:16 AM. |

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Behind the Hatari car, who knows which is the winningest Pontiac V8 powered GT car ?
Anybody know which cars have won the most nat events. And the most div races ? And the most smaller races ? |

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Now I'm gonna need a LOT of help with these old Pontiacs, from guys old enuff to remember those days.
Back around 1961-'62, NHRA came up with some classes which I assume are early versions of the Super Stock class. They had various class designations. One of the most famous may be the FX classes. I believe it was in '62, when Mickey Thompsons A/FX Tempest won both the Winter Nats & the US Nats. https://www.dragzine.com/news/drag-r...ac-lemans-afx/ Near as I can tell, the FX class allowed factory engines to be used in car models they did not come in. An example is a Pontiac 421SD engine, in a Tempest. Don't know exactly what mods, if any were allowed to the engine. That class sounds to me to be similar, in some ways to the modern day GT SS classes. If anybody here can give exact details of the early FX rules, please do so. Hayden Profit was driving M/T's Tempest at the '62 Winter Nats. They actually had the car marked FX/A. Lloyd Cox drove it at the US Nats. The car won the class at both races. Anybody wanna see some old rules ? https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2006u57wp...myEgvaR8KYSowa http://www.mre-books.com/ct953/superstock1962.html https://www.hagerty.com/articles-vid...per-duty-quick It seems that '61 & '62 were important years in SS history. https://www.facebook.com/FCRMotorspo...0684906992287/ https://www.hotrod.com/articles/fact...ental-detroit/ Pontiac was still a player in the A/FX class in '63. Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
In '61-'62, there were several classes that I assume could be called Super Stock. A few of these were: S/S, OS/S, SS/A, S/SA, A/SS, B/SS, N/SS.
Pontiac had competitive cars in all these classes. Last edited by oldskool; 01-11-2020 at 02:08 PM. |
