Default what stock combo is worse (or better) 1969 250-6 or 307 v8

So I had a brain storm ! after reading Billy's budget stocker post last summer, it got me thinking, I have a 69 Camaro streetcar 12 bolt, 4 speed, better axles, slap bars drive shaft loop you know the usual hot rod stuff! but it does not have a roll bar ( I don't want one either) and is by no means a race car! if it had a bar it would open many other possibilities.! anyway, what are your thoughts on this plan! I have a complete 307 carb to pan (I've read this motor combo is very under carbed) and I know of a cheap 250 6 cylinder for sale! what are the chances of putting together one of these 2 motors to build an index running combo on the cheap! (like some machine work,a cam ,good valves and a stocker valve job) not looking to run way under the index! I have plenty of chevy v8 transmissions, converters, shifters ,headers, lite weight race wheels and that kind of stuff laying around , I know Billy has run both these combos in his nova and I hope he chimes in! thanks ....................fred

to run the index in P @ 3290lbs with the 307 it would have to make a minimum of 270 hp ! is that even possible with a budget built motor?

Billy has never run a 250 inline 6. Billy (and I) have played with the 230 combo (him much longer than me). We discussed the 250 a few times, and sort of figured the 20 extra cubic inches, but the same 1bbl carb really didn’t equate to a better combo. Billy has done the 72 307, which is a little different than a 69 307. The 230 isn’t too bad. I was able to go .50-60 under with good pistons, a good cam, and a good valve job. Converter and transmission are very important too. Good luck with whatever combo you decide!

thanks Doug , i dont have a 6 cylinder yet but i do have the 307 and if i can come close to the index with a basic stocker deal and have something to work with thats fine , what im trying to figure is which one is a better starting point before i buy the 250.

Id say drop the 307 in and see how close to the index you are with what you have, then decide if it's worth going further with it.
I bracket raced my camaro for several years with a close to stock combo before deciding to put it into stock eliminator.
Good luck....
Or you could sell your car to me, my camaro was the one that I should have kept

I dont pretend to know half as much about 6 cyl . as Billy but a 230 @140 in Vsa sure looks better to me than a 307 @ 195 in Psa . If I remember right when Billy ran a 307 in his Nova it was rated @168 hp. Just my opinion Rick

I'm thinking the same thing rick ,but I've never even owned a car with a chevy 6 so I'm kind of Leary ! not that I'm against the idea of trying one
