I had a slick go flat at the end of a run at Indy and pulled over on the return road, opened the hatch pulled out the spare and jack and proceeded to change the tire. This was all before the scales.
Never seen so many Tech guys come flying up the return road to watch me and escort me to the scales.

It's hard to believe what memory cells get jarred by different subjects in here-back in my stocker days, early-mid 70s,I recall a story of a very fast 71 454 Chevelle in Div 1 with a 200 lb spare mounted in the trunk-this was way way before weight boxes and changing classes up or down was legal and the accepted way to do it. he was bounced from the event but no further recriminations except don't show back up with that spare.

Scott, I seam to have a similar recollection from E-town was it a Blue & White convertible running SS/EA?

That’s funny! They must have heard the one about the Cobra Jet that went 1.20 under and lost the spare tire before getting to the scales. LOL

Let's go back to this. Is it a requirement to have a spare? Or has it been a way to add weight in the past that's not needed now?

In stock it is not required, but can be used as additional weight beyond the weight box. One thing Travis used to look at was that it was at least something that you could bolt in the car. Correct bolt circle etc. we use a bumper jack and the original hold down on our 66 Nova sometimes when we run a heavier class.

Right church wrong pew--as far as I knew, it was the hardtop in SS/FA that had the heavy spare, both probably utilized it!

The spare in the Cuda was in the middle and high and in-between the two wheel wells. Also had jack, lug wrench, bumper adapter, and hold down all in the proper place.
