350 Chevy II's pretty much ruled the class most of 1970-1971

Our H/S record stood for quite sometime at 12.25.
At some point (I don't recall what year) Class wt breaks changed a lot and lower classed cars wound up in H/S

Warren -Register held the J/S record (I think it was) at 12.22 or 12.23....
Their car combination was moved into H/S and their record was then printed in ND as the H/S class record.

I wrote a letter to ND about it and it was printed in the letters section.
I was unhappy that our record was erased but meant no disrespect to the new record holders knowing how fast their car was.

We ran faster than that 12.25 a few times....and much faster than the MPH record.

Probably the best Chevy II H/S of that time around my area was Larry Lombardo's.....I saw him run some 12.teens and he won 2 WCS races I believe that year.

Another good Chevy II was Tom Elks from Div 3

Also a very good car in H/S was Jack Marks....anOlds Cutlass from Div 3.....
.
Both cars got in at the first 2 Summernationals......when we missed the show.....

I worked very hard trying to do well with our car......but it was tough and things just went against us at the big races....

Niche

In 1971,

You could get a 'Plain Jane' Barracuda with the 383/300 HP. They
came through with a Holley Carburetor.

Shipping Weight ........ #3241 lbs. ~ 300 HP = 10.80 Wt./HP
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not to be confused with the 1971 'Cuda 383, which had more
'Bells-and-Whistles'.

Shipping Weight ...... #3427 lbs. ~ 300 HP = 11.42 Wt./HP

There were some '71 Firebird H/Stockers. Anybody remember seeing them do any good ?

According to this list, Max Sterling won the H/S class & Gary Moore was RU, at Indy '71. Hey, that ain't bad. '71 Pontiac Birds got class Winner & RU @ Indy !

I've never posted one this way before but kinda fun.
This is the evolution of the W/P=10.50 class from 1968-1971, wins, R/U, records, chronology so you can see how the cars evolved.

NOT complete, just from the records/win sheets I do have.

Stick, then Auto (in red because ATF is red)
Stick cars, lots of W-31 Olds at least at the national level.
Auto cars, lots of dual quad 383 wagons (I wonder if even one ever left the assembly line).
Note the William Beck Ford, still guessing what car/engine that is.

Heavier 428CJ cars in both stick and auto, mostly auto.
455HO cars starting in 1971 of course.

The final one is a block chart of which ENGINES won in /S and /SA, in the hotter classes from W/P=8.00 to W/P=11.30, from 1967-1971.
