Default !964 Thunderbolt question

When Ford delivered these cars to their customers, were the headers installed on the motor or in the trunk? Also, I know that there were different configurations of exhaust systems run, but was there any exhaust installed from the factory?

Thanks,

Doug

Go to the HAMB and search "Thunderbolt Photo's". Many Guru's and T-Bolt owners sharing info over there. Tom.

The headers were installed at Dearborn Steel Tubing where the modifications took place allowing the installation of the FE engine. Back in the day, it was widely discussed that this was the first "factory delivered" car fitted with fabricated tubing headers. Generally speaking, the cars were delivered with an exhaust system since that was an NHRA requirement for competition in Super Stock class. There may have been variations but most had an "equalizer" pipe connecting the collectors with a single outlet coming off that equalizer at 90*, toward the rear of the car and connected to that was a single small diameter exhaust pipe that went over the rear end and terminated into a single tiny muffler, just in front of the rear bumper. Disclaimer; as everyone who deals with Ford products knows you leave yourself open for correction when you declare they did every car the same way without deviation. A Ford engineer assigned to the Thunderbolt project once told me that individuals were assigned to complete a unit and very little monitoring was done to assure that every detail of every vehicle was identical. I hope this helps and I'm sure you will now hear about all the variations.
