Default 65 Spring Nationals - Who were they?

Greetings

Ive been searching (unsuccessfully) for the winners of S/S and S/SA at the 65 NHRA Spring Nats.

Ive heard both winners were A990 Hemi cars but were DQ’d due to illegal ballast....

HOWEVER....I’m unsure if this is correct and still can’t find the drivers names.

Can I please ask members to check their resources as this is for a web site I am constructing.

Thx all.

If the Springnationals were in Bristol that year, there was no SS. Street was Fred Napfel over Carl Kirk. Stock was Mike Schmitt over Robert Borkes and Jr Stock was Bill Hoefer over Doug Patterson. This is from the 2006 NHRA Media Guide. No SS until 66 and then only at the Winternationals. SS became an every event elim in 67. There was a Top Stock in 66 also at Indy and Tulsa
.

Thx for the correction.......of course I meant S/S and S/SA which was the super stock class abbrev before 66.

There were runners in these classes at the Winters and Indy in 65....so I cant work out why not the Spring Nats?

My recollection and I was there, was that all the 65 Hemi cars were disqualified for hidden or illegal ballast.

The cars weighted less than the shipping weight when delivered.

That is why you later saw all the gas tank shields, non functional rear mounted traction bars etc.

If you can get a hold of Joe Smith former driver for Fenner Tubbs, he might be able to fill in the blanks. I think he still has Joe Smith Race Cars in the Dallas area. Could be wrong.

However I do also have a recollection of the "Black Arrow" running in eliminations. So maybe they just DQed the winner and runner up in class. Long time ago.

Thanks very much for the input. That confirms what I heard.
