Pulling a passenger head on a V8 Maverick
How do you get to the bottom row of bolts.
Thanks Sarge |

Re: Pulling a passenger head on a V8 Maverick
Maverick, Comet and Mustangs from the mid to late 60s share the same PIA engine bay and chassis. On my Mustang I have to use a tilt head torque wrench to get on the bolt head square and a lot of push. I found that the lower the car the better. Take the front wheels off and lower it onto jack stands as low as possible. The alternative is to raise the engine to get past the shock towers as best as possible. I try to limit this stuff to when the motor is out. For me that's every Winter. If you can, change to 12 point bolt heads. They are easier to grip at an angle. I heard a guy talking about his Porsche Carrera and he has to pull the motor to change the plugs, so it could be worse...

What issues are you having?
After removing the intake, exhaust, rockers accessories and pushrods, I use a breaker bar and loosen all the bolts in its appropriate sequence. After they are loose, I use a speed wrench with a swivel joint to remove the difficult bolts. |

They come off, just as described above. If you used head studs, they will have to come out too prior to head removal.

Re: Pulling a passenger head on a V8 Maverick
I was at the Indy Points Meet in 1978. I saw Fadely with Super Stock Maverick pull a head with the engine in the car and that was a Cleveland style head. I was close enough to see that he used a heavy rubber band to hold the 4 center head bolt up on the exhaust side.
