Default Ford Engine HELP ???

I have my car finished, and am strugling to get the engine to perform as it should. Or maybe I am asking too much from it. A short rundown of the car..

90 Mustang, mini tubbed, 28x10.5's, 3.73 gears, coil overs, adjustable rear suspention, full cage, tubular front end with adjustable coil over struts. Car wieghs in at 2850#. I am currently running a c-4 trans built with all the good stuff, and a 4800 BTE converter.

Motor is a 306 with KB hyperutectic 9.5:1's canfield aluminum heads, CNC ported 2.05/1.6 valves, parker funnel web intake, 750 carb, Stock block, Stock rods, stock crank. I use a MSD distributor, and a 6al box. The engine currently has a mid 500 lift hydrolic roller in it.

I have seen Stock and Super Stock cars with stock heads, cams run faster than I am currently going.

Car has been a best of 11.96 @ 119mph

What do I need to do to get the car to go 10.7's?

According to one of them slide rule calculators, I am only making 300HP, I would have thought this motor would have been higher.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Fred

do you have the cam card?
do you think that 3.73 is enough gear?
big heads dont always make an engine

one problem i see is that you have to much head for your combo, and another thing the car isnt hooking. You should be running 11.20-30s with that kind of mph. Not enough compression either!!! The first think i would do would be work on the susp.

Definitely a problem with the short times based on 119MPH and only 11.96 ET. Like Stephen said, you should be in the low 11's with a 119 MPH speed, so the car is not leaving hard.

Stockers don't have "stock cams". They have stock LIFT cams but tons of duration. Stocker motors, especially small blocks, spin at very high RPMs. A stocker with a small block will likely be spinning well over 7000 RPM and probably would have a 5.00 or higher gear, and a converter stalling at 5800+. Those are the things that make the car leave.

Your MPH/weight number says you are making about 375 HP. You are going to be hard pressed to spin it as hard as you will need to do to make more power without getting rid of those stock rods.

Making a stocker run quick ET's is NOT easy (or cheap), even if it looks like it should be.

Get out your checkbook!!

Found one of the time slips, 1.68@60', 7.75 - 89.56 mph @ 1/8, and 11.98@119.29 1/4

The car did leave kinda soft, I figured I still ad some adjusting to do there.

It didnt feel like it spun the tires, I was thinking the 3.73 gear may be off, might need a 4.30, or so, shifted at 5800, and went thru the top end at 5750. Friend of mine told me I did not want to twist a Hydrolic Roller motor past 6400.

I found the cam specs as well here they are.

I think your heads are way too big for the RPM's you are running. They sound like they are for a 7500 RPM engine to me.

You are definatly soft when it comes to the first 1/2 of the track, 60 foots pretty weak, but picking up 30 mph in the second half is unusually high, esp for a high 11 second automatic car. 3.73 gears with 28" slicks is pretty mild, cams fairly mild too,. agree with the others, your heads seem more suited to a higher revving combination with more cam, compression, convertor and gear than what you curently have. As for the hyd roller lifters, I doubt that you will find many 5.0 Mustang Stockers that don`t exeed 6400 rpm all the time.

Freddie

If your car is for the track only you will need a 5.43 gear with the tire that you are using. The 373 is a stock ratio in the mustang GT. It is a highway and around town setup. Typically race and street do not mix very well. If you choose to run less gear then you will sacrifice performance.

Thank You to everyone.

I am going to run the car as it sits for the last three races of this year, only because even though its slow its deadly consistant. I am working on a 360" bottom end that will have H-beam rods, and at least 12:1's in it. I have already picked up a .710 mechanical roller, with the matching springs and everything to put it in. I guess next I will get looking at gears.

I mainly want to run S/ST with the car till I get my S/C Altered finished. then I may look at trying to get the lil stang into a SS class thinking one of the Modified's like G or F/M, the only thing I really need to change on the car is the front K-Member take the QA-1 unit out and put a stock one back in.

You can't run SS/GM with a V8 engine.
In SS/FM with a 360" engine, the car would have to weigh over 4500#. Most of the cars in that class run 280 cube motors.

A 1990 Mustang with a 360" engine would probably best run SS/BM at 3060#.
