Thanks for posting Eddie; the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation are humbling and retelling their stories for all the future generations is exactly what our duty as citizens requires.

Cool Re: February 19, 1945

Thanks for posting,Eddie. It's often necessary to re visit history in order to appreciate the people who made it happen.I especially like the phrase that as the Marines last another 500 years, so will the USA. Thanks to all who serve and have served our Country.

The actual death toll was kept from the American people until after the War. Over 6000 Marines and sailors gave their lives for this 2.5 mile wide piece of real estate. 27 Americans were awarded the Medal of Honor for courageous conduct during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
“Among the men who fought on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue.” — Chester W. Nimitz, Fleet Admiral of the U.S. Navy & Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II

The 76th anniversary of the start of the World War II Battle of Iwo Jima is Wednesday. The battle is probably best remembered for the Feb. 23 flag raising atop Mount Suribachi, immortalized in a news photograph and a famous statue in Arlington, Va.
